    start buying:

    A van
    An expensive bike
    Tyre warmers
    Generator for warmers
    Awning
    Tyre changing kit
    Compressor
    Tools
    Toolbox
    Lots of tyres
    etc
    etc

    hmm - I'd really been of the "buy several sets of spare wheels"
    opinion.
    already got a fair few of these, though I do need a big box to put
    them all in.

    If there's two or three of you doing each meeting, then renting a van
    makes more sense.
    Tyre warmers are a little under 200 quid new. I'm not convinced you
    need them when you're starting out; my experience with "short" club
    races is that you spend so long in the holding area waiting for your
    start that there's not much point; Daz knows a lot more about this
    tho.
    You definitely need spare wheels with wets on. I think Daz was
    referring to the need to change (worn out) dry tyres, either at the
    meeting or between meetings. Dunno about Derby Phoenix, but plenty of
    club meetings have a tyre support van who will change tyres for a
    fiver.

    that's my take on it too. I already have one four-wheeled vehicle that
    sits outside my house for most of the week unused.
    I didn't think we'd need them anyway - initially at least, I won't be
    expecting to win races, and so am happy enough to warm them on the
    first lap.
    yeah, and I was thinking about having enough spare wheels that this
    wouldn't be necessary - I'm quite happy to pay someone to change
    tyres.
    the last track day I did had this facility too.

    That'd be one way - another would be to use the Icelandic
    auto-inflation approach - pour some petrol into the tyre and set a
    match to it. Two birds/one stone.

    It's a fair point and one that many argue over. They do help prevent
    cold tear though even if you are sitting in the holding area for a
    while. Heat in the rim is what you're after.
    You're right I was. DP had a fallout with Holbeach so he stopped
    coming to the meetings. They organised for a 150 year old bloke to
    turn up with his soap, bead breaker and levers. If you wanted your
    tyres changed in less than five hours you were knackered. I got fed
    up of it all sp brought my own kit. You can also get the tyres a lot
    cheaper than at the track. I reckon another few sets of tyres and the
    changing kit will have paid for itself.

    National Tyres turned up at Croft and wanted £20 to change a set.

    The devil's in the detail. If you want some that are robust, tested,
    got neat features like drawstings & velcro to attach, LEDs, etc then
    it would certainly be more work than I could be bothered with.
