Having a little trouble finding an insurer who will cover my mtb for
theft whilst at races (and they want 400 quid to cover it at other
times) so I figure a decent chain like an Almax would be a better bet
in the long run than paying out a fortune for insurance.

Are they really as good as they say? I'd hope they would be for the
amount of money they cost. Which lock though? Squire SS65CS or the
    CISA one?

    Handy to know.
It'll either be locking the bike up in the garage, or be carted around
in the car so that should be ok.

Yesterday, at a client, 4 scrotes stole a blokes MTB from the bike shed.

    It was worth about £2500.00.

CCTV caught them doing it, took them 2 minutes to remove 3 cable locks.

Bloke was gutted, I really felt for him as he had a weekend of MTB fun lined
    up too.

I don't think he appreciated it when I asked him the reason he protected his
    £2500 bike with a £15 lock.

    How did they remove them?

Couldn't tell from the footage, but the remnants suggested bolt croppers.

Ultimately, it probably isn't. What it does do is make the theft take
    time.

And in that time, hopefully someone notices.

Mind you, I reckon you'd need a bloody good cutting disc to get
through something like an Almax. Diamond disc on an angle grinder or
    summat.

  7. Go for the lock not the chain

Well this is what puts me off the cost/idea of the Almax. 30 seconds
with a battery powered grinder and a diamond disk will shred any
chain/lock. My FOAD Oxford and the chain/shackle I bought from a Madter
Locksmith might be slightly easier to cut/break but it is only a matter
of seconds. They are still a decent visual deterrent to most and the
really serious boys are going to get your bike if they want it,
    regardless.

The sensible division would seem to be between bicycle locks which any
scrote can break in an instant and something reasonably HD.
