Alloy Wheels

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Say it as you See it, Mar 3, 2007.

  1. Can anyone recommend a good alloy wheel cleaner?

There are many out there, but they do say recommendation is the best method
    of finding something.

Water works for me. Or Water + soft broom for the car alloys.

    Absolutely. Follow instructions, though.

Depends what state they're in. If corroded, Wonder Wheels does a fairly
good job of getting the fur off. If they're just very dirty with tar
spots, WD40 works better than anything.

    Catman says...
Wonder Wheels is good but bloody expensive.

If you have a Machine Mart close by then pop in and buy some of their
alloy wheel cleaner - it's dirt cheap and does a wonderful job, you can
dilute it down too. They do a 1 litre top up bottle which you decant
into the squirty bottle. I brush it onto my wheels using a cheap 1 inch
    paintbrush.

Point of order here - the squirty bottle wheel cleaner is presented in
the right concentration for use. The litre bottle contains phosphoric
acid, the 'active ingredient' of wheel cleaner, which needs dilution
    before spraying on alloy wheels.

I read about 'diluting' the acid with paraffin, to make an
all-in-one-go cleaner, but I've not been that brave yet.

Not if you buy it in a 5L container from Costco, it isn't.

Is that such a good idea, considerring the close proximity of brake
    disc's and rubber tyres?

Can't see any reason why not. Sounds sensible even.

Acid and oil don't mix very well, at least in the case of
    balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

When people are referring to "alloy wheels" here are they talking
about painted wheels or bare alloy?

For painted wheels I get good results with Autoglym's "Clean Wheels".
But it ain't cheap so I'm open to suggestions as well.

Just squirt it on a rag & wipe the wheel if you're a flid with bad aim.

Not yet, but I've got this car that needs spraying, see...

<goes back to sitting by front door waiting for compressor to be
delivered so that I can royally **** up an attempt at spraying it
myself before giving up & handing it to someone who knows what they're
doing but hey ho it's all good fun>
