    Help.

I've decided that I probably need a DVD writer in my life, to use for
    backups.

I never watch DVDs, so I'm not fussed about copying videos.

    I see "+" and "-" signs everywhere I turn.

Tell me what to buy. Spare me the gory details, just tell me what to
    buy.

    Thanks awfully.

  7. When you've bought one you might consider DVDShrink - from
    www.dvdshrink.org, funnily enough.

It works with Nero 6 and is a good bit of software; free too. It analyses
pretty much any DVD and then compresses it automatically so that it'll fit
onto a 4.7 DVD. You can choose to keep all the extras, titles and guff, or
to just copy the film in which case the quality will be better as it won't
have to compress it at all in most cases.

Not really. I mean it's fine if you're mildy dyslexic, but otherwise

Can you not get a PC DVD +/- re-writer?

If not, then, as you state you won't use it for videos etc, then get the
cheapest, + or -, based on unit cost and discs. But get a re-writer so you
can use the discs again if/when you **** up.

The extra cost of the rewritable discs has been more than saved by my being
able to wipe a disc and use it again after cock-ups etc.

But then I'm a gimp with technology anyway...

I'm quite happy with my LG GSA-4120B
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=117897

Had it a few months, it's fast enough and does (almost[1]) everything,
    so no worries.

[1] Don't think it does dual layer -R, but I don't know if there's such
a standard. I haven't seen any DL+R discs about for much less than a
tenner each, so I'm not bothering with that for now.
