Ice Age 2 on the other hand, well, parts of it.

Talking of which - did ITV get a discount on showing Ice Age on two
successive weekends or is there something more fundamental going on ?

Spete's quote sounded fairly fundamental to me.

Ali G or me posting it?

Ali was funny, I guess you didn't/don't get it.

  7. He's a one-joke comic. The schtick is funny the first time, and after
that the novelty wears off. Like Little Britain.

  8. Looked in, while surfing for something halfway interesting. I think that
Ali G is crunchingly unfunny as an act [1], anyway, but the bits I saw were
made even less impressive by the fact that Ali G *cannot* act. He's
confident enough as a TV turn, but in a film he was like a rabbit in
    headlights.

[1] Just a grown-up equivalent of a child saying 'bum' and willy'. Just a
quick comedy-turn which he [very cleverly] managed to turn into an industry.
Just a less brave or challenging version of 'Candid Camera' or 'You've been
    Framed'.[2]
    [2] Just my view.

So, as somebody who hasn't seen it, what exactly is your point?

  10. I rather wish that I had shown the same sense of self-discipline. The TV
version was the radio version painted in primary colours. Which is usually
    the case in radio/TV transfers.

  11. Still often is, as The News Quiz [1] remains funny. I was thinking more
about character-based comedy, rather than current affairs-based or quiz
programmes. The slavish copying of R4's Little Britain characters, and the
beating to death and beyond of every catchphrase, made for a very lame
programme. Then they just tried to out-grotesque themselves, and stopped
    bothering to write comedy.

[1] I have high hopes of Sandy Toksvig as the new chairman, when the
    programme returns.

    His interviews were amusing.

He once interviewed Sir Rhodes Boyson who was completely and utterly
unaware of what was going on during the interview. AliG even managed to
use the phrase "drinking from the furry cup".

    Fantastic stuff.

Plus the 'Ali G in the USA' series made Americans look stupid.
Admittedly it was like shooting fish in a barrel but even so.

Well. I never knew that. Seriously.

Still The News Quiz is miles better than HIGNFY ever was (and it was
pretty bloody good about 10 years ago.)

It has to be said that the stuff he did in Norn Iron was hysterical:

    "So, is you Irish?"
    "No, aye arm Briddish".
    "So... Is you on 'oliday?"
