  1. I've just bought a new pair for about £140.

They won't normaly do varifocals (i or2 do but require a measure up -- so you
don't save much). I'm a fairly high prescription so some on line suppliers
won't supply, but I've had a few pairs of bifocals that have been fine.

I've given up expensive pairs in favour of cheaper ones which I can afford to
replace whenever I have my eyes tested (annually). As I've worn glasses for
60 years I'm not fussy on styles.

My eyes have. It's the start of a slippery slope, though I can still
drive without specs. I notice that the new lenses, while 'stronger'
have less astigmatism correction than the older ones.

Actually, it has occurred to me to wonder how they *do* make
prescription plastic lenses. I mean, can they grind them?

Colour me not surprised. I think it's fucking horrendous and abuses the
system totally. The French monopoly[1] system is a site to see.

[1] Not the game, you f*ckers.

And what is the trade discount? 50%? 75%?
My last few pairs have been around £20, perfectly adequate, and light enough
despite a highish prescription. I doubt they'd last a decade, but long enoufg
    to be cost effective.

    What name?

Ah, I think I see why your wifes glasses were so cheap. Do they have LIDL
across the middle of the lenses?
    [/QUOTE]

    Ooh touchy ...

No they came directly from a manufacturer

Mine was for several pairs though - 2 '2-for-1' offers. Regular glasses,
reading glasses, driving glasses and sunglasses.

    I fixed that for you.

Hehehe, the last thing I am is touchy.

But I'm not talking about DNKY sunglasses but frameless prescription glasses,
there isn't anywhere to *put* a name! (unless you count the 1mm high name
along the arm, which I can't read without the glasses)
    I was just going to reply to Simian with this question;

    Which manufacturer?

Do you mean an online shop that gets the lenses & frames & puts them
    together?

Leighton (bloke over the path) has accounts with places like Ziess, Nikon,
Essilor (I was thinking of Nikon when I said Kodak before) and uses them just
for the lenses. Some of those manufacturers make frames too, a lot don't
    apparently.

Gets the frames from completely different manufacturers (he deals purely with
frameless glasses) and then grinds the lenses in his place and assembles the
    end product.

Specsavers/Boots/etc do the same thing, get the lenses and frames and put
them together, allowing you to mix and match from different manufacturers.

Indeed. I'm not too bad, -4 and -5.5, with no need for varifocals or
anything like that, but in order to avoid wearing a pair of milk
bottles I have to buy Nikon lenses.

Which are priced on par with their camera lenses.

Last pair was over 400 quid, and the frame was only 80. Thankfully I
get 50% discount with my optician.

seeing them make glasses at his place)

Start with a lense of a certain power and astigmatism correction.

Typically 3" diameter glass or plastic lense.

Take a fitting frame, take measurements of the victim so you will get the
center of the lense in line with their line of sight.

A good optician will ask if you want the glasses for normal every day use
(looking straight ahead), or used for desk / computer work (center of lense
offset slightly down so you look through the center when looking down at your
    desk / computer).

Make sure if they're astigmatism lenses you've got them rotated to the right
point and then grind them to shape.

Computer driven milling machine with a final polish by the look of the
kit in a "New glasses in an hour" place I used a while ago. Except it
took them 3 days and 2 goes to do mine. Feed the prescription into the
computer and it can work out and mill quite complicated profiles.

He gets them for what I said, based on his buying levels (v low).

He has said that if you can order 10,000 at once (like Boots / Specsavers)
then they'll offer you a further discount, something like 50%.

He is stuffed as he's only a small volume place.

Can't remember all the details of the catalogs / price lists, I was flicking
through them and talking to him as we were waiting for his stupid PC to back
itself up before I took it away to fix it.

I'd still much rather get glasses made someplace like his and pay the extra
as I've been screwed around by Specsavers enough times to avoid them like the
    plague.
    Cool.

I get massive headaches if the glasses aren't spot on, and as I'm wearing
them for hours a day, why get the cheapest?

I've been to Specsavers years ago (before I got laser) and they tried 3.5
times to get one set of glasses correct.

First set they made correctly, but had screwed up when they tested my eyes
    and the prescription was wrong.

Second set had thick and heavy lenses - I'd asked for thin & light. Bloke
said "they are from the thin and light range!" and told me I needed to say
that I actually wanted physically thin and light lenses from the thin and
    light range. Complete BS.

Third set, one lense was fine, second I was seeing double through them as
they'd put the lense into the grinding machine upside down so the astigmatism
correction was wrong, making it worse.

    Never. Again.

Before I got this set made I went to three different places and got three eye
tests. All three resulted in different prescriptions. Fucking joke.

  17. Ask him if he can get oakley frames[1] will ya? The one's I'm wearing
are borken and it's only a matter of time until I lose a lense.

[1] Specifically, Socket 4.0 in black.

There are two dots in the lens about an inch apart along the centre line
    of the lens
