    Bear :
    I can't imagine why.

Having said that, most of my memories from the the place are good; drinking,
smoking, shagging, cycling up to Biggin Hill to go flying, biggest library
for 20 miles. Not Lewisham or Croydon. Had a cinema. Keston ponds was nice.
    Ummm, good public transport.

There's definitely a "ladette" phenomonen - personified by Sarah Cox,
    apparently.

Where recent = 20 years, yes.
Yes, of course there are incidents. And certain clubs (Milwall,
Cardiff, Stoke) have more than the average.

However, I find it... sad, I suppose - that people here are quick to
comdemn football because a tiny amount of violent conduct goes on around
the sport, yet glorify the greatest cause of violence in society which
    is alcohol, of course.

That's where I nearly drowned when I was 6. Us por ol' sarf lunnoners
could get there by bus, so we did. And I got my foot caught in some
weed, went under and couldn't get up again. I was just beginning to
get scared when I saw a massive shape flying overhead, just above the
water - my Dad, diving in to save me, who then had to go home on said
bus in his swimming trunks, which were horrible.

Er, that's not the same thing at all. None of those people smother
both the front and back page with their pointless wittering, pretty
much every day (although they may do in the states). Everything the
Beckham Nonentity Corporate does is covered endlessly here, and why?
She can't sing, or act, he's not even that good a footballer. They
    have no real point.

Those cunts are no reason to dislike football, ffs. I'll be willing to
bet that I despise Beckham more than anyone else, and I'll happily admit
to chanting vile things about his wife and child.

Of course *proper* football[1] also encourages tribalism - could you claim
otherwise after being in the Shed? Yet violence is rare so I don't think
it is really fair to connect the two directly: there must be some other
    factor(s) involved.

I would also note that, as you say, soccer is part of "lad culture": not
the other way round. Why blame soccer for that? Are you going to
dissociate yourself from all the other things "lad culture" has adopted?

Many of the same criticisms - tribalism, violence, association with
certain unpleasant sub-cultures - could clearly be leveled at
motorcycling. Are you going to give that up, too?

[1] That's Rugby Union, for the particularly dense.

That's the least of our worries! However, it's not all bleak. Some of
the youngsters look promising, if they can just get over their teething
troubles. The next game could be... interesting.

Go back to my original post. That's why I don't like football. The
Beckhams are just tarnished gilt on a dented Jules Rimet trophy.
