Being developed for the US Army to keep soldiers cool in full gear at
up to 49C. It works off a heat source and has no seperate motors of
it's own. It will fit in a small back pack and weigh less that a
    frozen chook!

The developers hope that some day, it will use the heat off a car
engine to cool the internals of a car. I wonder how long it will be
until we can use one to keep us cool in full leathers while riding on
our bikes on a 40+C day?

I wonder whatever happened to Shoei's "air-conditioned" helmet?
It had a heat-exchanger (heatsink? radiator?) on the top and circulated
    cooled liquid throughout the lining.
I always worried that the heat-exchanger might catch on the road and cause
neck trauma in a get off but I suppose it could be made easily
    detachable....

Instead of using electricity to run a mechanical compressor, this latest system
is heat-actuated, which avoids having to carry heavy batteries. This means that
wearers can carry lighter, more energy-dense fuels like gasoline, propane or
diesel in a canister to burn and drive the cooling system.

If I read that right, you'll be cool until you hit the deck and fuel tank you
have strapped to your back bursts into flames.

Hmmm... if letting gas-under-pressure expand causes cooling
then how come farting in bed warms you up?

    Explain that one!

  6. ....or they can use latent heat of evaporation, crystallisation etc and have
the system "recharged" later. All in a rather non-flammable, non-toxic gel.
