One guy was lane splitting between 2 cars (at about 60 km/h) and the left
lane could go straight or turn right the car indicated to turn right (at an
aceptable range) as the bike came up beside him and when the car turned he
took most of the soft tissue off the bikers leg.

The other one I saw happened at a set of lights, the bike came up between
stopped cars and managed to slice his foot of on the front wheel arch of the
    car.

They both had a lack of decent gear on of course. I suspect that in decent
gear (even just quality boots) the injuries would have been less.

Where is the horn on your bike, and in which direction does it point?

Where are the pipes, and which way do they point?

Do drivers realise where the horn noise is coming from? It's a
recognised signal, but they still have to look. Can they tell where
your bike is just cos they hear pipes?

Does the noise made by a pipe change in a built up area, or when there
    are vechicles near by?

None of that's as important as:

Why are you riding so that someone who doesn't notice you can hurt you?
Isn't that totally stupid and reactive?

note that you are not required to be able to hear in order to get a
licence. If the driver you hope notices your pipes is deaf then you
will be hurt relying on them hearing you won't you. So better to learn
how to ride so that you aren't putting yourself in danger.

If you ride in a way that minimises danger from errant motorists, a loud
    pipe will make no difference.

If you ride in a way that relies on the attention of others, a loud pipe
    will make little difference.

James Mayfield is of the opinion:
Amen to that. We'd still have a ZZR-250 if I'd decided to lanesplit instead
    of sitting still.

Ahh yes, but then you wouldn't have a ZZR-600 sitting in pieces in my
    garage.

BTW, the o-ring has arrived. Sent you an email about the air filter bits.
Definately a goer for this weekend one way or the other.

I didn't say rely on them I said that they help you get noticed which isn't
    can't be a bad thing.

In my experience it has helped people notice me on the roads and has made my
life riding easyier by reducing the number of cars cutting in front of me in
    peak hour traffic.

Never did I say take it for granted that people will notice you with the
exhaust as that is just dumb and I did say that my riding style hasn't
changed since having it. I'm still very aware, still looking for escape
    roots bla bla bla

but it's not a required thing, because if you ride so it doesn't matter,
    your odds go way up.
Me, I have found the opposite. I've ridden the same bike with quiet
pipes, really loud ones, quiet again, and now loudish (but still only
    95db).

I have found no difference in car behaviour at all.

What I do notice is that if I ride sloppily, then I get more trouble
    than if I don't.

Whgat loud pipes do is cause trouble. They don't save lives, they make
    motorcycles hated.

  20. That is an almost identical description of my prang in Sydney in 1988,
same looking crest, same results on a VF1000R, little dickhead in an
Escort crests hill at witness' estimate of around 120kph in a 60 zone.
Washes a bit of speed off but of course has locked the wheels up so
wasn't in control. I had only stopped a few seconds earlier.
Thankfully didn't have time to move (if I'd managed to turn sideways
to get out of there, my legs would have taken the impact instead of
the bike's frame, which was snapped after being punted into the car in
    front of me).

    Cheers
