Ahhhh Lanesplitting

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by James Mayfield, Jun 22, 2004.

  1. Saved me about half an hour today on my 4km journey home from work.

Passed about 80-100 cars. All stationary.

One of the many reasons to love motorcycles.

    Grin.

Such sanctimony, and from someone whose alleged email address contains the
word "insecure"... you couldn't script this.

Depends ... there are safe and unsafe ways to do it. If you keep the speed
nice and slow, and put on high beam to piss the drivers off (atleast they
know you're there!) things tend to be ok. Like everything, you calculate the
risk and decide at the point in time.

Nice blanket comment thogh ... fucktard.

  5. Yep. I'll probably only be around for another 80 years or so (so I may as
well spend as little as possible of it stuck in traffic).

....you spend much more time in between the traffic lanes. I lanesplit at all
sorts of speeds on all sorts of roads in all sorts of traffic conditions and
have never had any sort of incident which might lead me to believe that
lanesplitting is in any way dangerous. Sharing the roads with drivers who
fail to give way at intersections and roundabouts on the other hand...

You have some form of permanency?

When you get to my age, shithead, then you can talk to me about

Around about 90% of bikers lane split (Guess by what I have seen)

How may times have you seen on the news, a motorcyclist died while lane
    spliting? I know I havn't seen it.

I do it every day in moving peak hour traffic and find that I get around the
same amout of people cut infront of me line splitting as I do while sticking
to my own lane. I did find that a loud exhaust help reduce people cutting
you off and keep yourself at a maximum of 40kmh difference from the moving
cars while covering your brakes else you won't be able to stop (This is a
    sports bike)

i'm surprised everyone has reacted like this...

i admit that as i'm from geelong i dont suffer the same sort of traffic as
melbourne but is the benefit worth the risk?

i see it as the sooner you get to the destination the sooner you get off
your beloved bike (unless its fucking cold that is)

So you've been reading this thread...
no you obviously haven't been paying attention... What is the risk?
It's about quality riding, not quantity. Would you rather spend 2 hours
riding to Lorne and back, or spend 3 hours riding to Dandenong and back?

Not that I want to get involved in the mud slinging (I prefer to watch and
    laugh).

I must admit I have never heard of death by lane splitting. The only
accidents I have (personally) seen because of it, left cripples instead
(personaly I'd prefer death) and in both cases the rider was at fault.
Personally I have no objection to lane splitting and even did it myself as a
young man with no responsibilities but as I now have a family to take care
of I prefer not to take the risk.

Done responsibly I think it should be legal.

Live to ride, ride to live.

Really? Seriously, do you really think motorcyclists _like_ the tag
    "temporary Australian"?
melbourne but is the benefit worth the risk?
Yes. The traffic is all stationary, and I do it relatively slowly
(certainly <30km/h). The risk of death is virtually nil, and the risk of
injury is minimal. There is risk in just sitting in traffic, too.
Much as just sitting on my bike not going anywhere is loads of fun,
it's much more fun when I'm actually moving.

  18. I tried to find the moving cars to split between, but there weren't any. It
    was like a carpark.

Ahhh, one of those classic lines, used by the unsure and insecure and
ill-informed, to cover events they cannot and choose not to comprehend. It's
right up there with un-australian as an abused term to make little dicked
politicians feel real good about themselves.

i didnt say it is a nice tag... i hate it too. what pissed me off was a lot
of guys younger than me are v/impressionable. "oh look... all these veteran
riders do it so will i" without thinking that maybe these old guys actually
have a good amount of experience within them.my sister has had her license
for a year and my ex probably 4 and both of them swerve the car when doing
headchecks (their hands follow their head for some reason) and heavy
traffic, them and a bike in the wrong position is a bad combination.
maybe the traffic jams day after day would wear down my patience too :-S
