I finally got round to having another look at the Guzzi alternator
today. The plan was to put a dodgy old regulator on and measure the AC
voltage under load so I could work out what resistor values & wattages
I'd need for a DIY regulator attempt. I've already got an outline
    design sorted.

Mindful of AntonyE's advice, I re-measured the coil resistance - OK.
Resistane to chassis: the same. Arse. The alternator's buggered.

So I took the cover off and, as I was poking around the rather rusty
lump within, a curved piece of alloy fell out. Double arse.

Then a wire came adrift. It gets better and better.

With the aid of Plusgas and a Universal Adjuster, I got the alternator
stator retaining screws out. The alloy outer retainer came off in two
more pieces. The inner one is cracked but still in one piece.

Well, I can bodge the retainers.

The alternator stator windings are still shorted to the core, so it
    needs rewiring. Arse cubed.

This is looking more and more like a long term or expensive job.

Ho hum. I wouldn't mind but the TL really isn't a good winter
commuter. Looks like I may well be queueing with the peasants for a
bit in the cage until I either fix the Guzzi or raid my savings and
    buy a winter hack.
