Age limit on carrying a child

    Hi,

shamefully on me I'm not a biker, something I always wanted to do but
never did, perhaps I should give it a go this year.

Anyways back on to what I was asking ... right I was wondering if there
is a specific bit of law of the age of a child that can ride as a
    passenger ?

I saw a L plate scooter carrying a child of no more than 5 with no
helmet on the kid riding pretty eratically. Other than the obvious fact
that he shouldn't be carrying a pillion passenger it got me thinking if
theres a specific law on this or is it when a kid can cling on for dear
    life he/she is ready ?

    Thanks

  2. Not really - the kid must be able to reach the footpegs and be able to
    sit securely, but that's all.
Personally, I strap them to the front mudguard, but that's just me.

I hope you reported the registration / bike of the rider because you stand a
    chance of saving the child.

Indeed I did. I could not ignore that as if something happens to that
poor child my mind would not be at ease.

Hopefully plod will do something with the information I have them.

    Cheers Peter,
Now as for you original question, my understanding is that there is no min
age limit but the pillion rider must be able to reach the foot pegs and sit
on a proper seat / chair. I know when we were in Luxemburg there was an age
limit of 12 years and they must reach the original foot pegs.

  6. No age limit - the kid's feet have got to be able to reach the pillion
    pegs, that's all.

I starting taking my kids from age, oh, I dunno, maybe 4 or 5. Small
low-powered Honda, withy a box behind their backs to lean against, and I
hoicked the pillion pegs up by four inches with the aid of a couple of
    brackets.

12-15 years later, and they're brilliant passengers and both ride (250
for one; 50cc scooter for t'other)

so if they are wearing a pair of garry glitters platform boots to reach the
pegs, thats ok?? mind if they were wearing his boots, he's prolly the
rider, so being a legal pillion is the least of their worries :)

I put one of those fucking 'Baby On Board' stickers on my top box
once. I found it wound up a particular type of bint to apoplexy.

Its amazing, the majority of folks with those signs driver the worst. I
see it as a sign to stay the hell away from.

Top man Gio, just what I was after.

Coincidently plod just left me after taking some more details and
telling me they made some "investigations" as he put it and the rider
denied it but asked me to come down and make a statement which I'll do,
during my lunch break. They said they will also be watching the bike
over the next few days at the same sort of time dicretely and if an
offence is commited to they deal with it.

Pretty good work actually, last time I used the police for a a serious
domestic assault next next house along (shocking I thought they was a
quiet couple) and the guy beat her black and blue and punctured her
lung, they took over an hour to come out as it "was a busy friday night"
sadly I was in no position to help the lady, having a broken leg on
crutches otherwise I would have happily let him try picking on me.

But I hope they catch him at it, which is what he said they have to do
    to prosecute him.

    Have a good day all.

Yeah, yeah it's very easy to criticise, but I bet you've never tried driving
while also wiping vomit off a seat, removing Barbie's arm from a child's
nose, stopping your wife putting on the CD of "Twinkle songs for little
folks" for the 4th time in a row and yelling for everybody to shut the ****
    up.

Let's just cut these people some slack, eh?

And don't get me started on those who say, "It's there so that if I have
an accident, the fire brigade know to look for the baby." Do they remove
the sign when the baby's not in the car? "Oh... err... no."

Nah, they're really soft on those careless drivers. Even if you're stupid
enough to, say, undertake an unmarked police car all you get is a driver
improvement course and then it's all forgotten about.

Much like they do with careless drivers who do a U-turn when someone's
    about to overtake them, really.

But, to be fair, you weren't displaying a tax disc - so really it was just a
    citizens arrest.
