AIUI it's sort of half-way between Council and private housing. When the church (and probably other charities) does/do it, it enters into a joint- equity agreement where it sells (say) half of the house to the other half- owners. I'm sure there are other methods, the one illustrated is predicated on a rising market. The charity doesn't lose money (not allowed to) but fulfills its charitable aims.
Ahh, that's housing association stuff. That I get. What I don't get are these constant calls to 'build affordable housing' Wasn't aware they were one and the same. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 145 2.0 Cloverleaf 156 V6 2.5 S2 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk

For every so many "Barratt" type houses you build in a new development, you have to build one grotty townhouse. The general idea is that councils get out of building and maintaining council houses, and scrotes don't get concentrated in one area, making the lying round doing nothing lifestyle less of an option because it's not the norm. OTOH you could see it as putting the thick kids in with the set 1 kids and hoping some of the brains will rub off... The thing that surprises me is that a lot of the social / housing association built stuff is far more architecturally interesting than the stuff people are choosing to pay for. I suspect there is also seriously reduced TCO.
What makes that particularly affordable? Or is it just to increase supply of one market segment to meet demand, and therefore reduce prices? AFAICS architecture makes very little difference to the market value of houses. At lease at 'normal' prices levels. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 145 2.0 Cloverleaf 156 V6 2.5 S2 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
I think it also means "build 2 bedroom semis/detached rather than 5 bedroom/3 garage/5 arches of land".
heh, IKWYM but the term is a bit vague isn't it? Who defines what "affordable" is? If a new development is comprised of "30% affordable housing" then that implies that 70% is *not* affordable. And replying to Ben's point, when we were looking at new builds a couple of years back, we found that despite the fact that the majority of the houses were 4/5 bedroom detached houses, there was absolutely no parking provided. One 4-bed design we looked at only had a car-port FFS. There was the odd plot that had a double garage, and by this I mean 3 or 4 plots in a development of 200+. No surprise that going through the estate nowadays is like driving through Tesco's car-park.
On this estate which is about 11 yrs old every house has a garage and a driveway with space for at least 1 car. plenty have space for 2 and double garages... And there are still lots of cars parked on the street as some families seem to have 3, 4 or 5 cars.
I thought that particular bit of loony left policy was dropped recently. There was something about it in the papers.
I don't think that addresses the problem AIUI, but ICBW -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 145 2.0 Cloverleaf 156 V6 2.5 S2 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
