  1. Hi,

Have been riding for a few years, but have always ridden automatics
/dodges flames/ because they tend to be a bit more practical. My last
bike was a Yamaha T-Max 500, a good scoot but lacking in power
    somewhat.

I now have a car, though, so practicality is not really an issue with
my choice now. What is, however, is insurance! (I'm 20). I have three
years NCB for the bike, and have a manual licence.

I'm looking mainly at 600's, something a couple of years old. I won't
be doing any more than 3k or so a year on it, an example of the type
of bike i'm looking at is a Hornet 600, found a 98/S on Autotrader in
good cond. for £2,100. Any other suggestions?

Not having ever really been into bikes, I have no idea of the
performance of this type of 600, anyone have figures for the 0-60,
    0-100, top end etc?

    snip middle bit
0-60 mph would be around 4 sec I think.

    0-100 9ish I would have thought.

I think they top out at 135 mph ish as they are quite low geared.

Remember the engine is the "same" (1) as the CBR600 ( famous for
being able to do everything quite well) which does 160mph +

    1. But softly tuned.

Took me a while but I think I am there. You haven't actually ridden a
motorcycle at all, all you have ridden is twist and go scooters?

    Well **** off, obviously.
I didn't know they did the auto/manual thing with PTWs. Is this right?
Does this mean that the little scrotes that buzz round the shops are
never gonna get to ride real bikes. Poor them.
Not for a bike with an auto box.

Pretty good, acceptable and about a foot deep and two foot wide for a 4
    cylinder jobby.

You may have trouble with the NCB, some insurers will ask for x years
on a similar bike. I get asked if mine is on a 600cc or greater bike.
Bandit 6 or SV650 if you're after that type of bike. In fact you'll
have to go for that type of bike in order to keep insurance at a
    sensible level.
Fast enough that you really don't need to worry about it.

Prolly around 4 seconds 0-60 and around 140mph top end for a bike like
the Fazer 6 or Bandit 6. Sports 600s such as the GSXR600 are around a
    155mph top end and a 3.5 second 0-60.

He should not have a problem - he is only planning to step up from a 500cc
to a 600cc. The insurer will unlikely have a clue about the TMax being an
auto. They'll probably just compare the insurance groups if anything.

If I wanted to insure, say, an R6 or R1 would the 8 or so years without a
claim on my 850 Guzzi count?

  9. Er.. I've ridden several manual motorbikes, but i've only _owned_
    scooters, yeah...

You've lost me. You can get an auto licence or a manual one, I have a
manual one, which means I took it on a manual motorcycle.

I don't want an auto box, thank you :)

Fook noes. I reckon I get asked because I'm a sprightly young thing
trying to insure a 190mph superbike. YMMV.

Just the way it was written made it sound like you had. My mistake.

I would love one. I think it is a great idea.

Depending on the insurer, I'd guess so. More importantly you could put
it on a multibike policy as 'the modern bike'.

  14. Sure. I've counted my CN classic insurance against other policies as
    valid NCB.

That's not quite what I meant.

Would the years spent on my Guzzi count as years of experience on a
similar bike as, say, an R6 or R1 for the purposes of the insurers rather
than would they count as NCB?

  16. Yes.

  17. I had a ring around last year with a view to going up to ~1000cc[1].
At the time ownership of the Bonneville seemed to be enough to
convince the insewerance that I had experience on bikes >600cc.[2]

[1] Still might but hard to justify with all the other things I
    want/need to spend money on.[3]
[2] The Fazer not counting seeing as it's 599cc
[3] Holidays, diving, foreign property as well as non essentials like
    food and the kids education.
