I have been doing a fair bit of touring recently and am becoming pee'd off
with the rucksack on my back. The guys I ride with say tank and seat bags
    rather than panniers.

Also, after 500 miles round Wales this weekend my hands were well cold in FT
£30'ers even though it was raining hard but they were dry. Decent winter
    gloves?

The MZ's *have* gone to your brain.

Pathans if you want to look like a Little Mermaid extra. If you don't I can
recommend the Dainese Assuan gore-tex double cuff (see link). They are the
only truly warm and weatherproof full fingered glove I've ever found. Key
point, they are not bulky under the palm so you do not get that slightly
remote feeling on the throttle which I hate, excellent feel on the brake
    lever too.
I left Bears last year a day after the NEC last year. Sheer brass monkey
weather, lashing rain, Gixxer Thou. Rode Swindon to Holyhead up through
Wales overnight, hard frost showing on the roadsides and never a problem.
Quite expensive at £80 but quality costs. I'd just lifted them for £50 at
    the show mind.

It's *really* important to get them a touch on the larger size, go up one
from your summer glove size. You need a bit of free air around the digits.

I have an Oxford tank bag which works well. I used it on the Bandit
previously. If you fill it right up (it has an expandable section) it
becomes a little unwieldy, but you can get quite a bit in it ordinarily.

I also have a Rigg bag which can either sit on the back seat or on the
sports rack I have. That will expand to about 18 inches high and is
remarkably steady. Between those two, I packed enough kit in the summer
for me and the wife to go away for a week on the bike.

I'm happy with both, but can't asy "I researched them and they were the
best" - I just happened accross them both half price in various sales.
The Oxford tank bag has a map holder, which is useful. It also has a
detatchable base which you can use as just a map holder.

Couldn't agree more. Well that and heated grips; then you can wear
    summer gloves all year around.

You use heated grips AND muffs?

Yes; heated grips mean I can wear summer gloves. Muffs mean my gloves
    don't get soaked.

I've about 45 miles to do at motorway speeds. It's my excuse anyway.

Ah. HG supplied me with a pair of summer type goretex armoured type things.
    They worked.
