Advice regarding becoming...

    Folklore states that it was to catch people out. When you had enough
    points on your licence to be facing a ban when caught, if one (or
    more) of those convictions were to be removed say within a period of a
    few weeks or a month, then you opted to go to court, then say you have
    lost yer licence when yer gets the summons, apply for another and when
    it arrives you have less points than at the time of the original
    offence.

    So, the little tinkers in Whitehall closed this gap by saying the
    points are valid for 3 years but the conviction, though spent stays on
    the licence for 4 years.
