Advice please - Yamaha XJ600

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Carmichael, Feb 9, 2006.

  1. A friend wants me to go with him to Seville tomorrow to look at an XJ600
    that he's thinking of buying.

    It's a 1991 (not divvy) with 47000 kms.
    New tyres.
"Possibly original" 4 into 2 exhaust.
    ITV (MOT) until October.
I think he's asking 800 euros - bear in mind that bike prices are a lot
    higher here in Spain.

What thinkest them what knowest? Run away? Bargain? If it's worth a
look, what should I/he be looking out for?

    Thanks in advance.

Check the rear suspension linkages for wear. A fairly obvious one I'm
sure. Check what type of regulator/rectifier it has. If it has an alloy
finned type then you should be OK. If it is a flat, metal, gel filled box
type thing then try and bargain. It will go pop. Trust me.

Have a good look at the wiring if you can and see if it's going brittle.
They have a habit of ageing badly.

There's not a right lot else that goes wrong IME. The clutch will rattle
but it shouldn't be excessive. That's about it apart from the obvious of
checking overall condition and the usual bearing/engine noises checks.

I would say £600 would be top money here for a good one so if it's nice
and bikes are dearer in Spain then £550ish sounds about right.

Is he really your friend, or does he think you're a wanker?

Ask him if he thinks you're a wanker. If he says yes get him to buy a
    lemon.

  8. Ok. I never had a friend in my life. I meant to say "acquaintance".

I'm supposed to be going to fix some welsh geezer's moped one day.
Perhaps I should rig it to blow up?

Pleasantly and politely tell them to go and look elsewhere for help.
    Then leave well alone.

Ok... I had a 1989 model with (IIRC), the same sort of miles on it, a few
    months ago.
Well I paid £500 for mine... and whilst it was tidy, it certainly wasn't
    mint.

Got that for it when it went, as well.
If bike prices are that much higher overall there, then sounds like a
reasonable deal to me so long as the bike is in half sensible nick...

    This one: http://www.ads-training.co.uk

I used a GS500 when teaching CBT's and restricted access but some other
instructors used the XJ's they didn't like them. They switched to Pans.
You wait for ages then you'll probably get three in a row.

I am glad you are about. Tyres for the GS, any recommendations?

I have got Avon's on at the moment but the back is going flat in the
middle so will need either pumping up or changing soon. Ideally I would
like a slightly flatter profile for the back as the chicken strips are
frankly embarrassing. The front is wearing fine.

I never changed the ones on mine, quite frankly anything will do because
whatever you chose the tyres will be better than the performance.

Don't worry about chicken strips, wear then as a badge of sensibility.

I suppose so. Modern rubber and all that jazz.

No that is for the VT, the GS simply doesn't ask to be ridden sensibly.

  18. No need. It'll self-destruct one day in protest at being owned by a
