Just purchased a '96 Yamaha TRX850. It's a very nice bike but the stock
mufflers make it sound pretty lame.
What's a good brand of muffler that will bring out the rumble? (Yes I
know it's Japanese but some of us have kids and a morgage so the best we
can do is pretend it's an Italian twin).

  2. You mean apart from, say, Akrapovic, D&D or Staintune:

I still can't believe there's still a TRX850 out there with the stock
    mufflers.

A full Over race system. You'd be doing a dis-service with any other brand.

It's a second hand import - '96 model 17,000km on the clock but looks
very different to the Australian model - brembo brakes, bigger carbs and
Marchesini wheels. Euro style white faced instruments (still with Yamaha
logos on them), red bike with white frame but different decals. It seems
the Japs went a little further to replicate the Italian look in their
local release of the bike but restrictions still prevented the sports
    exhaust.

The jap model didn't ship with Brembos or marchesinis I'm pretty sure
    - you've got something someone has done a nice job of upgrading on -
the brakes where the only thing dodgy about the trx - I replaced mine
with R1 blue spot calipers which were a bolt up swap.

Strongly recommend staintune - it has the nicest note of any of the
trx's I've heard (and I've heard quite a few) the remus is too raspy,
the over system is made of unobtainium and is hence deadly expensive.

Staintune sounds exactly the way it should sound :)

PS the Japanese model is speed restricted (190 I think), its a cut out
based on the speedo IIRC (google it) you can change the speedo to Oz
    model to remove the restriction

interesting i knew the jap imports came with brembo brakes, didnt know about
the marchesini's tho (might be the brembo cast ones)

i didnt mind the sumitomo's on mine, i just went for braided lines and a HH
    goodridge pads.

the front forks can be a little light weight, stiffer fork springs help out
    there

i had laser pipes on my first one and roo racing ones on my second

I had Magnum carbon fibre on mine, the note was
fantastic. Magnum pipes are made in Qld, worth
giving them a call for info on the pipes.
I found them to be extremely helpful, I had to
replace a couple of parts on mine, it had been
down the road before I got the bike.
Also , I am not sure about the situation is now
with regards compliance plates, but at the time
the magnums had compliance plates, but then the
    staintunes didn't.
I also liked the fact that the magnums could be
    repaired.
I personally would buy magnums as a first choice
    after having a set.
    I absolutely loved them

Thanks Des, I'll take your advice. I suppose the final decision will
come down to the best I can afford. I priced the staintunes at around
$1300 which is a bit XE.

And thanks everyone who replied, this is truly a wonderfully supportive
    newsgroup.
