Advice on K100

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Hamish Alker-Jones, May 27, 2005.

  1. Greetings punters

Whats the likelihood of finding a decent K100 these days and more
importantly, whats likely to shit itself?

Sa\w another 83 K100 (yes, that's right) and it reminded me of why I liked
them so much. No fairing, good looks, like a small Z13. Are they dogs or
    what?

    Cheers

Not dogs, but they are old now... so expect the problems you get on old
    bikes.

  3. Not dogs hammo, but old bikes. Try for something later than 12/85, they are
better bikes. Good chance you'll hear an engine rattle when cold, nothing
much to worry about, they'll do it forever without a problem. Bikes that
have been sitting a long time(not ridden) can have fuel system problems and
need a good cleanout before you use them. Look for something thats already
got a decent rear shock on it, check all the electrics work properly as
switches can get a bit lazy at times. The pinion spline is known to wear
out, but without stripping it to look its pretty hard to tell. On most
bikes you're talking big miles though before that's a problem.

Still got the '86 sidecar bike in my backyard, gonna be the basis of another
project one day: K1100 engine/gearbox, Showa front end with fourpot
calipers, 16valve RS wheels(not the skinny LT wheels), RS ratio Paralever
rear end, RS bars, low seat, loud stainless, 4-1, all wrapped in naked
bodywork. All I'm waiting on is a cheap K1100 as a donor.

My cousin has a K100 engine (mostly complete, but water pump missing), FREE
to a good home, Pick up only, Adelaide.

  5. I'm looking for K1100 (16 valve, with computer, wiring and gearbox, frame
would be nice), not K100. I've already got a running K100 motor in the
bike(with a battery it runs anyway) and another spare K100 engine under my
bench which has supposedly only done 140,000km.

Ah, well, (as my kids would say) "My bad".
    Still, it was free.....

  7. Hi Al

Did the later ones all have fairings, or was/is that a choice when
purchased? I quite like the look with out, or is that under the fairing?

What sort of rear shock is decent? Is there anything that should be given a
wide berth in this regard? The fuel systems, are bits and pieces getting
    rare or the like?

    Many thanks

Take anything aftermarket as being better than the original. In OZ, all the
later ones are faired (either RT, LT or RS), but under the bodywork they're
much the same (RS has taller diff ratio), with a headlight and blinkers you
make it a naked bike(the OEM BMW naked bits aren't easy to get).

Parts generally are pretty easy, but they haven't made them(8 valve K100s)
for a few years now even the wreckers have trouble getting stock, most are
now importing greys from Japan to wreck.

Found a K100RS on eBay with less than 10,000km on it, $8200+ for an '85,
    he's dreaming.

What do they do for parts in Japan?

They're forced to sell their old bikes and cars in Japan, so they don't
    need 'em

    JL
(or to be more accurate, they're taxed into it, if you've got the moolah
you can keep it, but it's expensive)

I see, instant export industry. One more reason to stay home (my newest
    conveyance is an '86 stepthrough).

Gary (actually, that's the newest I've ever owned :)

<shrug> It's for pollution reasons. Given they have 120m people on a set
of islands smaller than NZ I can understand why they'd be a bit
    aggressive on the subject.

    JL
(of course it doesn't hurt that there are a number of large car
manufacturers there who don't mind the enforced churn)

  13. And I just happen to have a spare bikini fairing (with round headlight
and indicators) AND the radiator shroud to convert a fully faired RT, LT
or possibly RS into a minimalist K100. :)

  15. The going price is, as always, what the buyer is prepared to pay. I
haven't advertised yet, but make me an offer. Give valid email address
and I can forward pics of same.
