Hi guys I want some views please.

I'm looking to buy an old enduro bike.
Either a Yamaha DT 175 MX or a Honda
250 XL possibly a 180 XL. I have rode on
both in the past and like them and have my
own views on them. I used to own a DT 175.
What are your views? Also I have noticed that
even though they are similar aged bikes the
DT175 MX normally are about 200 quid more
    than the XL any reason?

    Cheers taz.

taz let forth with a mighty belch and uttered :
My take on it. Likely wide of the mark.

The strokers are more desirable. Its not just the DT that is rising in
value, the Kawasaki KE range, Suzuki TS and PE are also on the up.

Why?, well, they are lighter, more fun[1] and spares are harder to come by.
As the spares situation is much better for Hondas than other Japanese
manufacturers[2], more Hondas are still around. Supply and demand innit?.
More of the 2t bikes were hammered by learners in their early life too.

If you actually want to ride off road, don't be put off by the strokers.
Unless they have been tuned by a twat, they are tractable from low revs,
don't bog, and don't foul the plug.

    [1]My own opinion
[2]My own perception. More than willing to be disabused of this notion

  3. a mate of mine had a KDX175, and boy was that fun. OK, it only did about 70
flat out, thanks to low gearing, but when properly on song, the acceleration
    was something else.

basically, you just need to find one you like the look of which is in as
good condition as you can afford.

I'd like such a thing as a winter hack, sometimes, for blatting around
greasy lanes and minimal risk of expensive damage if dropped. Always rather
fancied and XT500, but they seem to fetch silly money.

Wow I didn't mean to start a flame war.
Freedy thanks for your advice but I'll
make my own mind up about what people
    post.

  6. The only ShiteOldHonda dirt bikes worth considering are the XL185 (very
rare) and the XL250S. The others are either too big and unwieldy or too
    wet.

Pick of all the ShiteoldDirtBikes would be a Yamaha DT175MX, or maybe a
PE250 (more dirt than road oriented).

    Thanks Older Gentleman.
It was a DT 175 that I owned but to my regret
now, I sold it a few years back. It would be my
fav choice and I often kick myself for letting it
go but Ho Hum that's lifer Eh.

  8. There's a superb one on Ebay right now, but ukp1500 is taking the piss.
A grand wouldn't be out of court for a mint low-miler, though. Anything
half-decent costs at least 600 quid, nearer 700....

I've been watching them on ebay and I agree
with you.As it happens there is a dealer only
2 miles from me who has a DT175 in at the mo.
He also has an imported XL 400 in but I don't
know much about them. Seems a heavy bike.
I do like the look of the XL185 as well but like
you said early they are hard to get hold of.

Have you thought about a Honda XR200,certainly the monoshock model
(from about the mid eighties) was a better bike than either the DT175
or XL185. You should be able to get one for the same price as a decent
    DT.

    Cheers

To be honest I would consider any bike in that sort of range.
I'd not considered the XR200 but I'll give em a look..
Do you know of any for sale?

    Cheers taz.

Sorry, I don't. I just though your net was not being cast very wide. I
have always had a soft spot for the monoshock XR200, it is certainly a
better bike than an XL185 and I always thought they were nicer than
    the good old DT175.
Good luck in your hunt and let us know what you find :)
    Cheers

Cheers mate I've seen a XR 250 on ebay but its a newish bike
    and he wants silly money.
What I would love to do is get about 3-4 older bikes and rebuild
one really good looking bike out of them. By that I mean not just
Yamaha's and Hondas but 3-4 of any bikes and totally rebuild a
bike to my own design using the best bits of all he bikes.
    Something for the future Eh.

Flogged an XL185s last year for £300 - he got a bargin (no MOT or
tax, but a w/e tinkering would have seen it right).

Good little bike, 70mph down hill with a following wind, the best anti
lock brakes you can imagine i.e. not powerful enough to lock the front
down hill over wet chalk ;))))
