You mean that it's unusual for SMTP servers to require
a username and password to be able to send mail?

Not in my experience, but you appear to know more
than I do in such matters.

I'd say that every SMTP server I've ever used, from various ISPs,
hasn't required authentication. Usually, and ISP SMTP server
restricts access to users coming from within the ISPs own network,
    iyswim.

In this case, I'm not sure why the SMTP server in question accepts me
when I access it from home (via a completely different ISP service)
and not at work, unless it does something regarding reverse DNS lookup
    and validates from that.

My guess is your ISP's intercepting and redirecting tcp 25 to their own mail
relays, so you're not connecting directly to the relay you think you are.

  13. Whoever set up the SMTP server did it properly.

But you might try using SMTP AUTH - shout at the server admin to get
    them to switch it on..

  14. Yes. Unless they are publicly accessable and have been set up to allow
    SMTP AUTH.

Put it this way - of the many SMTP servers I have herded in the past
only 1 of them did SMTP AUTH.
