    ginge says
No, not patronising, I thankfully don't do it often. Emergency tractors,
    that kind of thing.
I tend to get the commentary after I've done something stupid. It goes
along the lines of "for **** sake Tori..." from a variety of people. I'd
prefer to avoid it, if possible.

I don't think you can learn how to use your bike instinctively, I think
you need to learn a 'system'. Regarding the IAM teaching you to ride
like an old gimmer, IIRC Mat Tab was an IAM member so I'm not sure
that's always the case. Then again maybe he's the exception to the rule
since if I'm honest I don't consciously know any IAM members. No doubt
there are dozens on here though.

I phrased it badly. I meant no one can teach you how to be instinctive.
People can teach you a system which you can adapt to your own needs etc.
only time and experience makes things instinctive.

If you're willing to accept risk then I'd agree that training is not
needed; I had none, being on the road within minutes of my moped
arriving and having only ridden field bikes (and pushbikes) before.
However I *did* crash a lot.

An alternative way to view it is that maybe she's worried that she
isn't good enough for the IAM?
    Great aren't they?

It took me nearly 30 years of riding to learn my most important
    lesson.

I am an IAM member. I know BRC is an IAM instructor. I know some very
good IAM riders, some young, some old.

They taught me how to look further forward which led to far less panic
breaking moments and also to be smoother in my overall riding.

the thing about the IAM is that they don't try to teach it you all at
once and make you go out and try the stuff they tell you.

I know plenty of inexperienced riders who would benefit from training
and perhaps Tori should at least give it a go before she dismisses it.

I have been considering going out and re-doing the IAM as the trumpet
has blasted my confidence into oblivion.

The only way to ride instinctively is to just get on it and do the
    miles.

Safely and instinctively aren't the same thing are they? I'd say
that I ride instinctively but I wouldn't claim to ride safely. I _can_
ride safely if I want to but that isn't instinctive for me iyswim.

    We crashed and learned.

I'm struggling to think of more than two people I know who've had any
form of training and can ride in a way that I'd describe as fast.

Ooh. Did you do it the traditional way (a lesson a week)? Or an
    accelerated version?

    Enquiring minds need to know.

I know which I why I suggested the whole riding style is looked at.
They appear to ride just as fast as anyone else, but when one is on an
observed run it's polite to ride at a sensible speed, even if that's
    over the speed limit.
I've never professed to know a better way than anyone else, especially
when it comes to riding motorcycles. My input was that perhaps Tori
    could join the IAM.

Sounds a bit rigourous. I only went round in one direction, IIRC.

    <snip>

I passed my test in 1972 (no instruction necessary in those days) and had no
instruction or assessment until I took the IAM test in 1992. Assessment
consisted of two afternoon runs with a very experienced rider with a brain
the size of a planet. The rides were in 20-mile sections, and then we would
stop and he would de-brief me on all my errors from when we started the
section. I was well impressed with him as an instructor - photographic
memory and the ability to explain why certain things were good or bad
without resorting to rigid rules or systems. Those rides were hard work. I
passed the test no problem, and I haven't had any contact with IAM since,
other than to pay my sub. I can't speak of other IAM members as I don't
know any, but the instruction I received was excellent and made me a better
rider - both faster and safer. I won't win any prizes for speed or
aggression, but I'm still here and enjoying my biking, and to me that's what
    it's all about.
