ADSL router

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Adrienne M Jenn, Jun 10, 2004.

  1. <jeremy mode>

I currently have ADSL through Pipex using a microfilter and USB modem.
I now need to connect two PCs and am guessing that the easiest way is
to use a router instead of the modem.

Ideally (and this could be normal for all I know) is to connect to Pc
through an ethernet cable then I could also connect my work lapdog

    so I have several questions...

    a) what's the best router to buy (needs to connect 4PCs eventually)
    b) <blag mode> does anyone have one spare?
    c) currently I have to connect my pc to the internet, could this be
done automatically without using their software (I cant add stuff to
    my work lapdog).

    TIA

Netgear make nice ones. Do you want wireless?
    I doubt it. Don't be a pikey.
Yeah the router would stay logged on 24/7 and then you just switch the
    machines on as needed.

Once set up, it's dead easy.

We've got a EA130 router and a NetGear EN104 to connect our two
machines. Seems to work quite well. Not expensive IIRC.

  4. which particular one though...?
no. seems like a lot of effort when the PCs rarely move.
    thats what I was hoping.

    along the lines of:
    DLINK G604T

Bought one yesterday (179 euros). Simple to use, has 4 Ethernet ports,
WiFi, built in ADSL modem, built in DHCP, NAT, Firewall, port
    forwarding, etc, etc.

    http://www.dlink.co.uk/pages/products/dsl_g604t.asp

Piece of piss to set up. Got mine installed in 5 mins.

Web interface is basic, but does all you need.

Looks really good does the job.

Sorry, not got a spare one.

Rope bored us all completely to death with wittery prose along the
    lines of:
True, but on my Linux box, the Alcatel USB frog would start having
timeouts after 18 odd days of continuous use and would then lose 'net
    connectivity.

The only way to clear it would be to reboot the box. I don't know if it
was the modem/software/Linux OS that caused the problem. Never bothered
to look as it was easier to reboot.

Keelworm bored us all completely to death with wittery prose along the
    lines of:
Heh, not on the Linux box at home. Maybe now, that I've got it plugged
into the DLINK, I'll measure it.

At work, since I installed Mandrake 9.2:

    [cab@fra-linux1 cab]$ uptime
    18:14:43 up 126 days, 6:31, 12 users, load average: 1.00, 1.02, 1.05

Then again, this isn't connected to a USB ADSL modem that screws up
    once in a while.

Besides, don't talk to me about uptime. I work for a company that
    specialises in uptime.

Our Windows platforms have an average uptime of 99.9997%.
99.999%corresponds to less than 5.25 minutes of down time per year. Our
UNIX boxes and VOS boxes are pretty much comparable.

The cheapest way to do what you want is to buy a 4 port modem/router from
    Ebuyer for £42 + post
    http://tinyurl.com/owlu

No software needed to use it, configured with any web browser.

I have their kit (a model 715). It's not intuitive enough for a non
techie IMHO. The Netgear one is Luddite friendly, and looks pretty.

My guess would be the modem - they're notoriously crap unless you've got the
'right' drivers and even then they're a bit flakey.
I have two sitting in the garage :)

My Netgear router is quite nifty and very easy to use.

Unless you try upgrade the BIOS - that's a pigs ear.

Not half as much so as the Solwise one where you have to set up a TFTP
    server to do so.

  19. thanks for the offer but I think I'm sorted with not only a free
router but a kind bloke to come and install it.

however, I always have beer in, feel free to visit.

Ta, I will at some point. Is your moby number the same as it was? If
so I'll give you a yell next time I'm in the locality, or passing by.
