    I'm _really_ confused now.

Moved house. Gave Pipex my month notice of cancellation. Took out a new
    ADSL subscription with Virgin.

However, when I run an ADSL speed test / check my IP addy, it reports
back that I'm still on Pipex, with my old IP.

Surely this can't be right? - Especially as I got a confirmation from
Virgin that I have had my Virgin ADSL activated.

    Can anyone explain this?

<fx: flicks open BOFH excuse book>

Sun spot activity will cause that, turning it on and off quickly 100
    times will cure it.

Is the speed test you're doing simply reporting the IP address of your
computer? If you use a router you'll get an internal IP address assigned
to your computer by the router (usually using the DHCP system), this
probably won't change when you change ISP.

Apart from that Virgin don't have their own servers (or at least
didn't), and usually use somebody elses system to provide the hardware -
it was NTL for a long while. However, they might be using Pipex now, and
it's possible you might have picked up the same IP address off the DNS
    server.

Even more simply, it might just be picking up cookie information from
your browser if you've used that site before.

This is an easy one..... What are you logging on as, is it still hard
    coded to your old account?

The line doesn't go straight from your house to your ISP, like....

It's reporting 81.86.161.221, which is my old Pipex IP.

All my internal IPs are 192.168.0.x (I don't use DHCP, as I like to keep
track of the IPs of the machines on my network)
That's a bit freaky, if that's the case.
No, can't be that, as I clear my cache, history and cookies on a regular
basis (at least once a week).

Using my Virgin login details. However, Pipex login still works. I'm
convinced that I could login using bollocks@****.com and it'd still
    work.
Heh. I know that. It's just very odd that, using a totally different
line, I still have the same old IP.

    (SteveH) spouted the following in
    C: tracert 81.86.161.221
    tracing route to 81-86-161-221.dsl.pipex.com [81.86.161.221]
over a maximum of 30 hops

Looks like you're still with pipex then...

I resisted the temptation to portscan you ;-)

SteveH was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
Could your router be set up to try to re-aquire the same IP?

Alternatively it may be that the DHCP server at Pipex - who might or
might not supply your service - is set up to always dish out the same
    IP to your MAC address.

<limited understanding of low level DHCP>

Not really. IPs are assigned on the basis of MAC addresses, which are
hard coded into your netowrk device. If Virgin are using Pipex, then
I would fully expect you to get your 'old' IP back.

    </luolld>

As for the login, you may well be able to use your old pipex details,
asusming they have not been removed yet. ADSL authentication works
slightly differently from dial up (or it did when I was invoved with
Claranet's roll out). Basically it checks that
is a valid username from a BT database, then asks whatever.com's
server to check the password. There is a limit whereby ISPs can
prevent their usernames from being used to connect to other ISPs
netowrks (can't remember what it is called, something like Service
Selection Barring or summat) but if the previous analysis of Virgin's
set up is correct, I doubt they'd be using it.....

I'm tempted to try that on the Procurve switch that seems to be
shutting down for 40 seconds every so often.........

Hmmm. I thought Pipex used NTL, so I don't really understand this at
    all.

I suppose I'll only find out when I lose my connection.

Erm, If Pipex use NTL *and* Virgin use NTL, wouldn't there be a link
    there?
If they both use NTL, then you will!

Well it could happen if you are still using your pipex logon as well.
(I know you said you weren't but stranger things have happened)

It's possible. Mac OSX does have the occasional cache glitch, it could
    be worth clearing these.
