ADSL filter question (again)

Phone line comes in through outside wall. Then it splits inside the
master socket box. One wire runs upstairs to the main phone, run off a
    filter.

Second wire exits via normal phone socket.

Wireless modem/router connected to this socket.

Should there be a filter on this, as it isn't actually connected to a
phone at all. What would be the effect, if it doesn't need a filter,
    of putting one on?

Lost all connectivity today. Connects, drops, connects, drops,
connects, drops. IDnet logged something like 150 logons this morning.
We moved the modem/router closer to the phone socket, put a filter on
it (it didn't have one before and worked fine), took the faceplate off
the master phone socket and connected to the test socket inside.

No joy at all. IDnet is seeing if there'sa BT problem. Or it could be
the brand new DG834 modem/router (ADSL2) they supplied.

    Thoughts?

You need a filter on _every_ line, then question function of components
    if the fault's still apparent.

No you don't. The adsl socket on a filter is a pass-thru, so plugging
the modem into a socket without a filter is fine. You need a filter on
every socket that has a phone/fax etc. plugged in.

I found fitting one of these
    http://www.solwise.co.uk/images/adsl-nteface-mid.gif in place of the
BT socket was worth about 25% increase in speed.

Normally the filters also act as splitters so you do want to have one on
there and the router plugged into the ADSL output of the filter.

I think I've got a spare one somewhere if you're coming down to Rye
    tomorrow.

I've got a few spares. It's been operating without a filter quite
    happily for ages.

I've had this with Bethere. Did the test socket thing, no joy. BT engineers
out twice, no fault found. The line is virtually stable now, although
Bethere have had to adjust the signal to noise ratio to 15dB to compensate
for the crappy, but within specification, BT wiring. Whacking up the SNR
has slowed the download speed by a third but it is still better than what I
    had from Virgin.

  9. It was BT, turns out. Major outage (multiple outages, in fact).

If you were using ADSL filters with Virgin Cable, then that was why uyou had
    problems :)

  11. I found that disconnecting the bell wire did much the same.
