Sorry if this has already been posted. This was posted on ridingsa.com
last week. I thought I would post it on here in case it pops up
    interstate. Cheers.

my 2001 Suzuki GSXR 1000 was stolen from Dulux at Beverley (Adelaide)
    on Friday afternoon.

It is a rare color scheme being red/black/silver. Unfortunately it was
    uninsured at the time.

The thieves were driving a silver 4wd with stolen plates RMV-001. The
driver was a red headed bloke and the other guy who took the bike was
a stocky dark haired olive skinned man..

Im offering a HUGE REWARD, no questions asked for any info leading to
    the return of my bike.

Ive had the bike for 5 years and it was my absolute pride and joy.

If you could, please keep an eye out and if possible, print off the
email and picture and hand it round.

Only difference from the pic supplied is that it now has a Yoshi
carbon fibre half system and Michelin pilot power tyres.

I know this sounds like a lost cause but its all i can do to try to
    find my bike.

Any help would be hugely appreciated

Tough insurance company. It would take 45 years of insurance premiums for
    me.

Yeah, well, when you get to tick the box next to the question:"Is your
motorcycle garaged in an Ivory Tower?" the rest of us have to honestly
    ignore it.

Only if you think that the net value of the insurance you buy is limited
to the absolute value written on the policy of the insured vehicle.
Hint: they're not just selling insurance, they're buying risk.

    Nev, you are wrong.

To buy anything someone has to pay money.

    They are accepting a bet.

Insurance companies are only bookmakers, and down towards the shonky end
    of bookmakers, at that.

Most bookies will pay out when they lose a bet, but, if there is
sufficient at stake, insurance companies can, and will, use any possible
    tactic to avoid paying out.

Why do you think the "small print" on the policy is so fucking small,
    and written in Icelandic?

You definitely need good oral communication skills to fully
insure a bike. I personally don't think the head **** is worth
it (even if my bike got stollen).

In 18 yrs your 06 Gixer is worth maybe 2K less your Excess, say $400, gives
    you $1600
They're not going to pay you 18K for a 10 year old bike

How much have you paid in premiums 10 years to get your $1600 ?

If your GSXR's not stolen or written off in 3-4 years your probably behind

I have not had I bike written off or stolen in 30 years of continual riding
I choose to self insure and I'm so far in front I've got 5 lovely bikes paid
    for with the insurance
    premiums I've saved

It's all about risk and gambling
Insurance Co's rearly loose the bet.

  11. Not ignoring, in my case I don't borrow
Yes all good points in your case.

You have to be proven to be "at fault" to cop their damage
I have been paid by the other "at fault" parties insurer, but it was along
    road to tread though
    the eventual outcome was favorable.
Yes in the end we all pay, inversly, for the level of risk we're prepared
    to take.
It's all about options and paying for your choices when the shit hits the
    fan.

Eh? On which fairy tale planet does it happen that way? If the other
party or their insurance company say that you were at fault, they may
pursue you all the way through to your bankruptcy proceedings in order
to recover whatever costs they believe are owed to them. I think you'll
find in those circumstances that you're the one who's attempting to
prove that you weren't at fault.
...and if they dispute it, you're the one who will have to start forking
out money from your own pocket to take legal action of your own to
pursue the other party or their insurer for whatever you consider you
    deserve.

I haven't had comp insurance for years. I decided to for the Bike
That Shall Not Be Named because it cost so damn much. As I hadn't had
insurance for years it wasn't cheap either.... But on top of the
purchase price it wasn't that unrealistic.

  15. Further to Paulh's subsequent reply, in my case, I'm one up on that; I
already have a second bike bought and maintained with the money I save
by not having insurance... and I'm even further ahead by never letting
my bikes see the inside of a commercial workshop...

My driving record is probably worse than Paulh's, I'm considerably
younger than him, you, or Theo, and, unlike you and Theo, I don't live
in the country, where insurance premiums are lower. The quotes I
receive for comprehensive insurance from people who'll even touch me
never amount to less than 25% of the value of the bike I'm "trying" to
ensure... back when I was 24 and rode a new R1, it was even worse.

Geezus Christ! When I was 24 all you could buy were BSAs and Triumphs. Oh,
    and the newly released Vespa.

You are younger than me, too, but that doesn't make you silly! :)
The last time I asked (seriously) about bike insurance was when I was
trying to get a company bike, and, despite all the tax-dodges, I'd still
have been paying a stupid amount of money, as in more than one quarter
of the bike's value, for a negligible risk.

I am currently asking for quotes for insurance for the Z50, however.
Given it's size and weight, I can't actually ride it any place for fear
of some bastard hoisting it into the boot of a car.

In effect, I am trying to "sell" the Z50 by default. So far no good
    offers. <sigh>

Yup. Previously I "insured" by having a parts collection - after all
the bikes were not worth all that much to an insurance company and the
bits would have to be found, so I found them[1].... Given the stupid
quotes I got, I'm probably ahead! And I can keep the bikes on the
    road much longer.

I would have come out ahead if I'd insured the Mighty Scooter, but
only just considering the market value and the quotes. And it's just
money, I want my 2 stroke hooligan tool back dammit!

    Zebee

[1] they come in waves dammit. Someone's parting out an 850GT on US
fleabay and I want some of it but I'm definitely out of money this
    month.
