Adjusting counterbalancer chain tension on KLR650

  1. How do you adjust the counterbalancer chain tension on the KLR650?
I lost my owner's manual but I remember it had something to do with a
bolt under a rubber plug on the left side of the engine...

  2. Thanks for the info, Sam. I have the second year KLR600, which is
    actually 564cc, not 650cc...

I just pulled the neglected garage queen out of storage again and am
planning to ride around on rough narrow paved roads in the local
foothills and national forest areas. It only has 4K miles on it after
20 years in my garage. I ride the other three bikes a lot more...

I have always noticed strange rattles and clanks and buzzes. The engine
will sometimes suddenly clank and stop from an idle. I hear the clank
from the left side of the engine, but it may be that the transmission
is suddenly popping out of neutral into gear. I've had that happen
while sitting on the bike while it's idling in neutral and the bike
    lurches forward and stalls.

And that silly KACR automatic compression release will stick and hold
the exhaust valve open and I can't kick the damned thing over fast
enough to deactivate the KACR. I have to always have a good battery to
crank it fast enough to overcome the KACR...

Then there is the buzzy kick starter lever. Inadvertently push against
it with my ankle, and I can hear it buzzing as it tries to engage the
    ratchet...

Yesterday, while battling to kick start the engine, I felt my knee hit
that red knob on the kill switch, breaking it off. I figured out how to
bypass the kill switch so I could start the engine. But the petcock
leaks like a sieve, so I need new rubber parts for it.

The kill switch/starter switch costs about $40 to $50 for a new one,
but I figure I don't really need a kill switch anyway. It's always been
impossible for me to thumb the starter button with my small hand on the
throttle, I have to push the starter button with my left hand, while
working the throttle with my right hand. That's why I bypassed the
clutch safety interlock switch. Otherwise, I need three hands to start
the Kwacker when it's in gear...

  3. Hey, leave the counterbalancer chain off entirely! ;-)

You got carpal tunnel or somethin' ?
