I'm a huge Thin Lizzy fan and hadn't even thought about adapting one
    of their tracks. Brilliant.

I play in a classic rock covers band and this is my main interest, but four
of us from the band decided to put together an acoustic side project. My
original 'vision' for this was to cover rock classics acoustically and also
to look at any other good songs on their own merit and do them
acoustically - whether well known or not - on the basis that a good song is
always a good song. I was looking maybe at some of the Led Zeppelin 3 era
stuff as well. This project was always supposed to be for our enjoyment
    above everything

    Funny things bands....

One or two of the others have looked at some material including pop
standards from the sixties and seventies and which are not my cup of tea at
all to the point that I personally find four or five of the songs
cringeworthily embarrassing. These songs have been somewhat undemocratically
selected on the basis that they are well known rather than them being
    particularly good songs.

Also there seems to have been a misconception by some band members that
because the songs are acoustic they should all be slow and gentle -
    basically without balls :) WRONG!!

OK - it's got to be democratic so after a lot of very hard tongue biting by
me we've now done about 9 or 10 gigs during which I have come to wholly
loathe two thirds of the set and mostly like the other third - on the
positive side at least I've got more than my allotted 25% of song choices I
    suppose :).

Our acoustic set contains songs by quite a diverse bunch of artists
including: Elton John, Searchers, Van Halen, Beatles, Rolling Stones,
Status Quo, Def Leppard, Marvin Gaye, Bee Gees (shudder...) and those are
only the ones that come to mind immediately. I find many of the songs
dreary, dated and uninspiring and I've made my opinions known.

My point is that it doesn't really matter to any of the audiences we've
played to whether we personally like the songs we're playing as long as they
are played reasonably well and are recognisable. We definitely have the 'N'
factor for novelty and the comment we get most from audiences is that they
didn't expect us to be as good as we are and that it was like a breath of
fresh air to see a band doing the material we cover, acoustically and most
importantly that they really enjoyed the performance. We've played a couple
of places twice and had the same reaction both times.

Oh well, I suppose there's no accounting for taste :)

I'm quite frankly and honestly surprised that our audiences haven't publicly
slated some of the stuff we've done in front of them - but obviously that's
my my own perceptions getting in the way. I thought we'd definitely need
the chicken wire screen in front of us. If I'd been in the audience
watching, I'm sure I would have walked out of the room as quickly as my
little legs could carry me upon hearing the opening chords of the Searchers'
When You Walk in the Room (cringe). This is either because myself and one
of the other guys in the band are miserable old gits with no sense of 'fun'
by other people's standards (true), some of the other bands who have played
at the venues where we play are truly dismal and in comparison we are
relatively good (probably true), when alcohol becomes involved audiences are
much less discerning (almost certainly true).

In my currently jaded state I now actually believe we could play literally
anything from Motorhead's Ace of Spades to Rolf Harris' Two Little Boys on
acoustic guitars and it would still receive a positive reaction
(possibly/probably influenced by the various audiences intake of falling
down water) which is quite sad I think - but before someone suggests that we
actually conduct a suitable scientifically measurable experiment along these
    lines, I'm off... ;-)

Seriously, based on bitter-sweet experience, I wouldn't worry too much about
the actual songs you pick for your acoustic set as long as you can get
behind them and you can play/sing them well with confidence. If I were
you, I'd largely pick songs you actually like and enjoy playing/can sing
from whatever genre of music you want.

Lots of good suggestions from other posters so far BTW

Thanks for taking the time to post Nick. The one thing I'm certain
about is that I'm going to only do stuff I like.
