So Goaty and I are heading off for Perth on thursday. The plan is to make
an early start, and find somewhere between Adelaide and Port Augusta to
    stay.

Somewhere along Mt Pleasant- Williamstown Gawler, Kalpunda -
    Clare -Gladstone.

Depends on how we feel and what we find.

Any recommended places in that area?
Any nice little pubs in picturesque towns with attractive beer wenches and
inexpensive but comfortable rooms? Moto-friendly would be good.

Subsequent overnight stops are expected to be Ceduna, Cocklebiddy, and
Kalgoolie(sp?) where I am told Kings hotel is a recommended stopping spot.

Don't miss the opportunity to take a detour off the highway to Wilmington and
cut a few laps of Horrocks Pass. It'll probably be the last chance you get to
counter steer for quite a few days.

And watch that rear tyre go flat-treaded. A few mates and I did a 5,000 km trip
out western NSW mid-year. I'd put new tyres on specially. Somewhere between Cobar
and Broken Hill we found ourselves praying for 50 kph sidewinds just so we could
lean the bikes over. And when we got back I found that the rear tyre is flattened
from the constant straight road riding. It looks like lasting only half the normal
distance unless I very quickly get into 5,000 kms of very twisty roads to
    compensate.

Noted. at about 800k from home one might be a little stuffed. But it could
make an interesting start to the run to Ceduna.
More precise directions? Horrocks pass is between ..... and ........

    Yeah, I know.
I put a new set of Macadams on the bike on Wednesday. Expect they will be a
little worn when I get back. Just have to spend a couple of weekends down
Gippsland way. We are planning on coming back via at least part of the GOR,
so that should help. Then again at $350 a set, tyres are not a big issue
    for me.

Yes it'll be at the start of day 2. Between Wilmington and Port Augusta. As
I recall it when you reach the northern end of the pass you're looking out
over the Gulf, and the Princes Hwy is visible a few km off in the distance, so
it's not very far out of your way. If you avoid the Princes Hwy north of
Adelaide and take alternative roads then it's probably on your way.

....they could stay at the B&B at Snowton, just down the road a bit. Have a
    barrel of fun, too.

Rather than do a couple of laps of Horrocks Pass, I'd do a couple of the
road from near Murray Town down to Port Germein. Very interesting.

It's on the way from Gladstone to Pt Augusta - should be in the morning
if we get as far as Gladstone (84km up). Hema Map 62 G1.

I thought they had you over a barrel there ...
So Gladstone -> Pt Pirie -> Pt Germein -> Murray Town -> Wilmington
(Horrocks) -> Pt Augusta sounds like the go.

    Cheers

Go to Port Augusta, then to Nullarbor Roadhouse, then Kal. Remember
that as you travel West you gain an extra half hour of daylight for
every 50 km travelled. you wind up going much further than you think
    you will.

Have a good trip and look me up.

And be filled with awe at the logic behind the decision to plant a pole with
the little brown "Highway 1" sign on it, all by itself at the side of the
highway about 100km west of Eucla... which puts it roughly both 600km east and
west of the last place you might have taken a wrong turn.
