    Hey guys,

My friends and I are planning a Trip to Walcha (We want to see what
all the fuss is about re the Oxley Highway). Can anybody recommend some
good (inexpensive + motorcyclist friendly) accommodation in the area?

Pete, have they restocked the pub yet mate? :)

I can't speak for Walcha accommodation but I can speak for the Oxley
*getting misty eyed*. Be a bit careful of our friends in blue on the long
stretches between Walcha and the start of the twisties. Remember to bow
your head to Ginger's Ck and just enjoooooy those corners.

From where are you heading to Walcha incidentally?

    Cheerks (lucky bastards),

The New England Hotel. The night I stayed in there they didn't have meals on
but the other hotel in town did a good steak and a small shop just up from the
pub which did a reasonable breakfast.

Heading off from Galston either Thursday Night (27 Jan) or Fri morning (28
Jan) up the cost to Port Macquarie then inland to Walcha day 1 (or if advise
is via Gloucester and thunderbolts way), Walcha to Mudgee (via Dunedoo) day
    2, then home day 3.

Hmmmm - last Friday the missus and I drove to Gloucester via Old Pac. Hwy,
Wollombi, Broke, Singleton, Gresford, Dungog => Gloucester. We've done it
many times on bikes and in cars and the scenery and sheer road enjoyment
makes for a great trip. From Gloucester you proceed to Taree (another nice
country road) and then join the Pathetic Hwy, but at least you're only about
50 mins out of PM from that point. (You can turn right at Kew and head to
Port through Laurieton & Lake Cathie - lovely run along the coast).

If you have the time, IMHO this route is a much better option. This route
will probably take you the best part of 6 hours where the freeway option
will probably be about 4ish hours. To me 6 hours of fun through glorious
countryside and pretty towns beats 4 hours of deadly boring freeway (drove
    it home yesterday... zzzzz).

The backroads between Singleton and Dungog are truly *truly* wonderful and
in all our travels I don't think we've seen police and encountered very
little traffic (touch wood). There are some roughish surfaces - esp. around
Gresford - but the whole thing is sealed now (incl' that short stretch out
of Dungog that used to be dirt). Right now the countryside is very green
and sometimes you even feel compelled to slow down so you can see it!
    (...but not very often...).

Either way, you'll have a great time and I'm keen to do the Mudgee leg you
mention too. Looking forward to hearing your report on that stretch.

    Cheers,

They have very cheap pub accommodation or cheap motel units and a shed to
    put the bikes in.

Coming into town from the Oxley it's the first Pub on right across from
the Caltex servo. From Gloucester turn right in town and just over the
bridge. It has an in-built Chinese Restaurant which will no doubt be open
this time of year on a weekend. Tell Bob, Pete with the trike sent you.
May not help you but it might get me a beer!

Reminds me of when we lived at Woomelang. They had a school fair, and the
kids told Mrs Conehead that there would be sheaf-tossing. She heard it as
sheep-tossing (being a city girl) and asked how they tossed the sheep.
    "With pitchforks, of course!"

****, and the bar just didnt shut, there was about 14+ in our group,
spending up big, so he didnt care.. we asked about the local cops, he
    said
"SARGE? THATS HIM AT THE BAR"...
