Accident - What to do next?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Masterblaster, May 6, 2005.

  1. 'Interesting' spill this morning: minding my own business on my commuter
scooter, approx 30mph. Sudden and all too brief realisation that something
is not right. Next thing: lying on the ground next to scooter (also on the
ground). Picked myself & the bike up, passers-by helped me drag the thing
to the kerb, with difficulty. Inspection revealed a metal loop wound
tightly across the front wheel, locking it solid.

It appears that the 'loop' is one of those metal rings that provide the
pressure to keep car wheel trims on!!!!! Just the right diameter to flip
up, get picked up by wheel rotation & jam the thing solid!!!! Odds of one in
a trillion or what (time to buy a lottery ticket, methinks).

Damage to me: bruises & scuffs (I do wear the proper kit, kevlar & all).
Damage to bike: much scraping of bodywork and possibly bent or twisted
forks. Rideable, but doesn't feel right.

    Questions:
    - Do I make an insurance claim? The bike is old and although well
maintained probably worth zilch, although repairing or replacing it is
    another matter.
    - Do I have a recourse against the local council?

All advice (legal & all) gratefully received.

Depends on how much No Claims you have and wether having it repaired would
meke it feel better when riding etc.
Is it feasible to repair yourself and avoid the insewerants?

    For?

If it was a feckin great pothole, or a nasty missing drain cover then
possibly. Otherwise unless you saw if come off a car, got the number and
then reported it etc I reckon no chance.
    My 2p worth....

If you're fully comp and the cost of the loss of no claims is less than
the value of the bike (less excess) then yes.
    Don't be bloody silly.

No. Check it over when you'd had a bit of a rest. Even if you have bent the
forks they are easy to replace on a scooter and should be nice and cheap
from a breaker if you can't bend them straight.

If you make a claim you will pay more for insurance for the next 5 years and
while that might not cost you too much on your 50 at the mo you may want a
bigger bike in future and then it would be a lot more
What do you think they might have done wrong?

  6. I've just worked out that if you help me out another 15,000 times I'll have
enough to cover the cost of repairs.

    Thanks for the advice! ;-)

I couldn't - but I also wouldn't try to blame the council for something that
has nothing to do with them.
