Interesting snippet I got from this article:
    http://drive.fairfax.com.au/content-new/news/general/2003/09/10/FFXDRFX8EKD.
    html

    which says:
"The worst of the intersections -- Miranda's monster Five Ways roundabout --
tops the list with 222 recorded collisions last year.

But since November, when major road works were completed at the site, there
have been just six crashes reported to the insurance company."

The govt won't like this. A *massive* reduction in accidents without the
need for any speed cameras. Who ever heard of such a thing?

Good-one Mr Carr - That's putting the resolution where the problem ain't!

I bet none of the black-spots have speed cameras either!

Quite a nice quantum leap in logic you've taken there.
Who said speed cameras reduce collision rates? Speed cameras save lives.

Oh, sorry I missed that. I assumed the governmnet were interested in road
    safety ;)
In other related news, the media have been blowing up about motorists not
slowing down around schools lately. The new school speed cameras have pinged
however many tens of thousand of drivers. The media instantly concluded that
the world is an evil place, but the conclusion they never made was that if
tens of thousands of people are speeding past schools, and kids aren't
getting runover, then perhaps, just perhaps, speed isn't so bad after all.
The camera in Mosman is the biggest earner, and hence the most offenders,
yet it has a zero fatality rate.
By their logic, if there are lots of speeders, shouldn't there also be lots
    of accidents?

Indeed. But now you have made another quantum leap and are assuming
beurocrats have IQ's higher than the average lemming.

I don't see the correlation you're trying to make here. Five Ways
roundabout was a treacherous and ill-designed roundabout having
Sydney drivers who are naturally inept trying to negotiate it. They
dug it up and turned it into traffic light city. Neither one having
    anything to do with speed.

I suspect that it wasn't funded and completed by a conglomeration of
private citizens who were inept at dealing with this particular
    roundabout?

    Cheers,
    Rod.

When you say '2948209842093840', does that mean 2?

    What's going on here?
As a disgusting roundabout with very bad visibility. Put in lights,
and viola! it's down to 6 claims YTD.
Grade seperated interchange with traffic lights.
    And again.
    And again.
The old "Mechano set" traffic lights.
    More traffic lights
    And again.
    Not familiar with this one
    Grade seperated with lights.
    More traffic lights.

The 5 Ways kinda makes sense - it *was* absolutely horrible, but now
appears to be fixed. But what about the rest? How the hell can any
more engineering be done than an overpass and traffic lights at the
interchange point? Why are the worst intersections in the state the
ones with traffic lights? it *must* be the sheer volume of traffic
these intersections carry. Therefore, I am forced to wonder whether
these are black spots because of sheer numbers, rather than crashes
per 10k vehicles using them (for example). More bastardisation with
    meaningless stats, perhaps?

  14. In many of those mentioned with lights, the braking shunts must be counted?

So inattention/following too close are the big hitters, so to speak.
Everybody knows that if the traffic is slow enough, shunts don't happen, or
are minor enough to not be reported.
Ego, get the traffic ultra slow and the 'accident rate' decreases.

The real deal there is that the point GovCo is aiming for is far too slow.
Something those advocating speed cameras have sadly missed.

    So far.

    I'll say!!
There was a Japanese tourist floundering off the coast at Surfers' and
a speed camera just jumped right in and pulled her to the shore!!
Apart from the fine she was very thankful!
(...and I think they're making a movie about the life of a
    speed-camera; "The Great Gatso").
    They're bloody heros, they are!!
