I get this. I was slightly amazed how much patronizing goes on. I
often get "can you ride that" when I get off my Gixxer. I don't mind
being given up a seat or the help I get when I take the garden waste
to the dump though so I suppose it's swings and roundabouts.

Off home - I'll answer this from there (if I can wrest SO's laptop from
    her).

Deserved saying though. The more info, the less fear, less prejudice
and more chance of humanity inching individual by individual to having
more respect and consdieration for others regardless of sex, gender,
    race, disability etc etc.

Oh shit I sound like a BHaLC.

I don't think it is that high anymore DEs but I agree this view of
women is common, though not explicitly stated.
    Now onto Mike's points...
I don't think so. The hang over from old style patriarchy is still
    strong.
You don't have to be a wife to have commitment.
    'What about love?'
So what's more important your relationship with your wife or the
    possible loss of property?
FFS why is someone flirting/chatting your wife up a threat? That
implies a lack of trust in her commitment to you.

Hmmmm. Best not to be in that position in the first place.
<nods> A very long time ago I was with a very possessive partner who
due to his fear of losing me would not let me out without him. At the
time I thought that was what love was all about and was flattered.
Then I realised how restrictive this was and the 'me' he was afraid of
losing was slowly dying inside. It didn't end well.
Depends how you define chatting up. I will happily chat away to just
about anyone because I'm genuinely interested in people and their
lives and what makes them tick. Smiling and being open can border on
flirting but I have no interest in forming a sexual relationship with
anyone other than Himself. And I wasn't intending that to happen, I
No one person can supply all of another's needs. Unrealistic and
    ultimately destructive.

I was saying that protecting one's marriage from intrusive
    opportunists does not imply patriarchy.
It depends on the intensity.. My wife has been approached by
various men over the years and their attentions have varied in
approach from "fancy a shag love" to one bloke who ended up
stealing her underwear from our washing line, I kid you not.

The latter I perceived as a threat.

I'm not possessive, not even slightly, if anything I am quite the
opposite. My wife has her own life and takes part in activities
which have nothing to do with me. She has a social life which
includes going to night clubs and I never get involved. She also
takes holidays abroad sometimes with one of her 'single' mates
    and sometimes with our daughter.

Actually, I did that first when I took her to Skiathos aged just
fourteen.. Jeez, the number of idiots who thought I was some
pervy old twat with a fourteen year old "partner". *sigh*
