AGV Strada (polycarbonate of course), gr.1400, around $100. I don't think
there is a lighter, cheaper full-face helmet.

  2. If you were to remove all that superfluous padding, you could easily gret it
    under 1000 g.

And which is largely bullshit. All lids sold for road use here have to
    meet a minimum standard, AS-1698.

MP> The cheap end of the market:

    MP> * Are noisier (a *lot* frigging noisier);

Not necessarily true. A mate has an $1,100 Arai Doohan special and he
reckons that it's a noisy lid. Comfortable. My $700 AGV is as noisy as
my old, cheap Shoei. In fact, all the lids that I tried on before
settling on the AGV were all noisy. The cheap $200 HJC was no noisier
    than the rest.

    MP> * Made from space-age materials, so are usually lighter;

What? As seen on TV space-age materials??

MP> There's also often better air circulation and other benefits (like better
MP> anti-fog air circulation) in the top-end ones.

My expensive AGV still requires a Fog City type visor liner, as did the
    cheap Shoei.

Yeah. You can tell how old it is by the numbers.

Way back when, there were no standards. No tests, no way to know what
you were buying, so you hoped expensive meant better.

Nowadays you do know. So I really wish people would stop trotting that
    out like it was useful.

True, true, they're up to about AS-5000 by now ...

The big change seems to be from ones where the visor has 'pods'
over the ends to ones where it just clips in. This used to
be only on expensive helmets, but it seems to be spreading to the
    cheaper ones by now.

My $500-on-special-a-few-years-ago Shoei is a lot quieter than my
previous $200 Nolan, and the Nolan's visor ratchet broke rather
easily compared to the Shoei which is still going strong.

And if you want to stick you head in something that meets the minimum
    standard buy the cheap crap.

If you want better protection buy a good quality lid, be it a AGV, Shoei,
    BMW or Arai Etc Etc.

  9. The point is that you can get helmets that not only meet AS-1698 but also
the various snell standards without paying a fortune for them. Laser and
AGV (for example) both have moderately priced safe helmets that do.

Paying $1000 instead of 3 or 4 hundred is paying for finish, features and
    graphics not extra safety.

Thre is nothing that says an expensive lid meets any higher standard.

Me, I am well aware that a helmet is only going to help a little bit.

If you spend a lot of money on a lid, all you are buying is a false
    sense of security.

A good quality helmet can be had for around $500.

A more comfortable helmet in my opinion is also safer.

That's what they're counting on! (Otherwise they wouldn't be spending all that money on advertising)

There is nothing that says an expensive lid does not meet a higher standard.
No, you are buying comfort, build quality and reduced weight.

Or that a cheap ones doesn't.
REduced weight maybe not. Comfort maybe not. Build quality probably.

Of the cheap ones I've had, they've been as comfortable as the expensive
    ones, most have been lighter.

I think that spending $700 on a lid because you think it's "safer" than
a $300 one is a false sense of security. $700 because you like it is
    personal opinion and no problem.

I am adamant that the best advice to a novice is $300 on the helmet and
$400 on rider training. Because I want the novice to keep riding and
have the best possible chance of staying together, and if there is any
safety advantage in that helmet price sifference, it's not going to be
anywhere near the safety benefit of the course.

No the best advice is $500-600 on a helmet and $1,000 on rider training,
    $500 on a Jacket, $250 on pants, $100 on gloves, $20 on a t-shirt,
$6.00 on underwear and $10.00 on socks.
