Nicely said. And abbreviation has its own nice and tidy pigeon hole where we
can put st. for street, rd. for road and Hudds. for Huddersfield and the
    like.

    Anyway, I'd pronounce it "Ibbum".

    under linux. Nice screen.

  10. But we do. They are both abbreviations. It's just that RoSPA is an
abbreviation that can be pronounced following the spelling conventions
of English, a sub-set of "abbreviation" for which the word "acronym" was
    coined quite recently.

  11. I have no problem calling Mr. etc abbreviations. They are just another
sub-set of the wide family of lexical strings rolled up under the
    general definition of "abbreviation".

But "acronym" was specifically coined to represent pronounceable
abbreviations. Look it up in OED.
    Wouldn't we all :)

  12. Look up /synonym/ in the OED.

If you say an Ford is any kind of car, driveable or not,
then you are simply taking Ford and car as synonyms.

Now do you see the flaw in your logic?
    [/QUOTE]
    No. Please elucidate.

Certainly I can *say* "a Ford is any kind of car" if I wanted to, but at
the present state of world trade it is patently untrue. If Ford were to
take over the world motor industry then it might well ultimately become
generally accepted, and they would indeed be synonyms. Take for
instance "Biro", which for many people in the UK is synonymous with
    "ball point pen".

You keep saying that, but you haven't posted the *exact* and full
    definition. I haven't either, but - as I've explained - that's
because the login is on my PC which is currently on a boat in the
