But you understood, so it doesn't much matter.

    Now answer the question.

Depends, you've chosen an extreme example, but language shifts like
this do occur. Look at regional (within one country) variations, slang
terms, playground rhymes, language within groups. There is a wider
issue of culture and identity here, the terms we use to state who and
For someone who is supposedly intelligent you really show yourself up
    at times.

Second response to this, as the thread has sparked a family
discussion. This from number one son,

'To some it may be bollocks, but to others it's understandable
    bollocks. I vote for Blaney'

  8. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the

Is this bosun Higgs, by any chance?

He is that. NAGTY member and everything. Detention this week for
failure to apply himself though. Long conversation with Deputy Head
including 'If he doesn't go to one of the top universities then he's
wasting his talents'. Much like I did then :(
I wish. The trouble with teaching them to have a mind of their own is
well, they have a mind of their own.

Dr Ivan D. Reid secured a place in history by writing:
    And to nail this finally:

"Word: A sound or a combination of sounds, or its representation in writing
or printing, that symbolizes and communicates a meaning and may consist of
a single morpheme or of a combination of morphemes"

So any bunch of initial letters will do, it doesn't have to be an /English/
word, it doesn't have to be a word in /any/ language, it doesn't have to be
pronounceable without excessive gobbing. And all this wittering about
abbreviations is, frankly, out of place in a discussion about acronyms.

You are, of course, correct: only a complete imbecile could disagree.[1]

Whilst there is still life in the original definitions and their
differences add to our language I think that informed[2] people should try
    to use the words "correctly".

[1] Just why *do* people respond to Des? [2] Like wot we ar.
