I wanted to service the DR650 on the weekend, but noticed that there was
something about it that looked slightly odd. Like the CDI box resting on
    the swingarm.

Turns out that the PO had somehow managed to break off one of the
mounting lugs on the CDI unit and figured that holding it up with one
bolt and some duct tape on the other side was going to be sufficient.

Of course the vibration from the engine broke the mounting bracket
itself in half, so I now need a battery holder (mounting bracket is an
integral part of it) and a CDI unit...

Quoth the owner of the local bike shop: "Those rednecks around here sure
do come up with some scary interesting fixes".

Oh well, I guess I better take the car to work that I can't get new
    tires for...

Or some of that nice thick double-sided tape and a cable tie or two to
secure it properly to a flat metal plate, and some extra wiring
grafted in so you can mount it anywhere you want.

He's a German, living in America. Don't bother with the "this is an
English language newsgroup" bollocks you sad, pedantic twat.

I doubt that this would work on this bike - it's pretty good at
    vibrating stuff apart.

The look on the face of the guy at the DMV here when I wandered in
recently and asked for a new plate was priceless.

Me: "I need a new plate for my bike"
    "Why? What happened?"
"It vibrated off and all I have left is these two corners..."

Fortunately thanks to the wonders of ebay, a CDI unit and a battery tray
are now winging/snailing there way over here.

That's no excuse; We mustn't let standards slip.
