Unfuckingreal in a passat estate full of wife & child, I am coming back next year on a fucking fast bike -- Nige R1 MX5
that's the shit part. The best bit of the A82 is south of FW via Glencoe, across Rannoch Moor and down the west side of Loch Lomond. Good licence losing territory in the summer. More chance there than North Wales.
I did it in the opposite direction (Glasgow to Inverness) a decade or so ago in a Metro and it was a hoot.
Must be about the only reason I stay in this country now. That and the road to Skye and probably the road to Braemar.
Seen a lot of filth though, unmarked & vans on the A9 (expected) vans allover the place on the lesser routes, having said that, the weather has been stunning to say the least
Did that in May (bike) and a week or so ago (car), *mega* traffic jams both times in the middle of nowhere because there is a new bridge being built across Rannoch Moor. I'd give it 6 months to get sorted out.
I drove that a few weeks ago coming over from Edinburgh. I even managed to overtake a few bikes in my shit old 1.8 Focus. Dunno what they were playing at.
I love most of the roads in the Highlands. It's just a shame they're normally so fcking far away from me. And this year, when they've been nice and close, the bike has been 400 miles away. Ho hum, only another 5 weeks till I return to Her Majesty's Glorious Midlands.
Did Inverness to Fort William and back, sort of, but along the Great Glen in a yacht. That was in May this year. When we moored up to eat we saw a huge number of bikes either UK reg or German reg. Beautiful country side, good food and beer.
That's the road where I hit a pothole and wrecked both wheels on my second ZZR1100. I didn't have any joy trying to claim off the cunts who supposedly maintained the road either -- Lozzo Versys 650 Inter-Continental Hyperbolistic Missile , CBR600F-W racebike in the making, TS250C, RD400F (somewhere) BMW E46 318iSE (it's a car, not one of those 2-wheeled pieces of shite they churn out)
We did the same journey in a cruiser in June this year. Really lovely and we had great weather too. Drove up via Edinburgh and then back down the other side over Glencoe and Rannoch Moor to Glasgow; great roads even in a Fiat 500. Same obs; loads of bikes about but traffic levels on the A82 were such that they were mostly stuck in the traffic.
Did you stop to eat and drink at The Eagle floating pub at Lagan Locks? Truly excellent food. This is the company we hired the Yacht through. The Eagle is their 'local' so they have a bit about it on their web site. http://www.westhighlandsailing.com/eagle.html
Bang on. That top bit has loads of double solids and coaches and camper vans, etc. The bit through Glencoe is stunning. You can also do a little tour round Kinlochleven, which is very pretty. We did Scotland this year and the best day's riding was from Pitlochry to Braemar, then left at Crathie, across the ski slopes, then Inverness to Ullapool. It was, in fact, probably the best day's riding of my life. That despite the rain and the Scots idea of maintaining road surfaces by liberally sprinkling them with gravel.
No - saw it though! I recommend the Fiddler's at Drumnadrochit! We used this co:http://www.caleycruisers.com/ I like the idea of a sailing boat, but I've never sailed so probably not the best way to start!
Fort Augustus, by the look of it! Here's our cruiser about 50 yards nearer the bridge. http://www.flickr.com/photos/48468879@N05/sets/72157625123402069/
