What is intrinsically 'wrong' with a data storage device of 300MB
(I assume by "300m" you meant 300 megabytes)?

Hard disks have historically been constructed in all sorts of
sizes, including many in the range of 300MB, the exact size varying
depending on whether you define a MB as 1e6 bytes, 1000 * 1024 bytes,
    or 2^10 bytes.

Solid-state memory devices typically follow size boundaries that are
integral powers of two for obvious reasons, but no such logic governs
    hard disk sizes.

OK, I'll believe the story when someoen shows me a drive with the exact
size of 300MB (anyway you want to cut it)

I could, as ever, be very wrong here.
