It's worth reading the Oirish times and Sunday Independent just now.
They have no sense of Irony it seems.

    rental.

I'd hardly expect "house repairs" to amount to anything close to 25% of
    my annual mortgage payments.[/QUOTE]

The monthly maintenance for my flat is roughly a third of my monthly
mortgage payments, and if the Evil Management get their way, could
soon be touching closer to 50%.

You don't really think it was the City bombings that swung it do you?

Hint: There were attacks and hoaxes that hit (and closed) motorways and
major rail lines in England just before the negotiations finally got
    serious.

Infrastructure. I will *never* understand why it took the IRA so long to
    figure that one out.

I don't have a big mortgage. I managed this by living in the east
midlands, where the average price of a detached house is 160K.

Yes, but you're surrounded by people who talk funny, and vulnerable to
visits from dumpy burds with complexes.

Ask yourself: Is it not worth spending a bit more to live somewhere
    nice?

    I talk funny.
    I'm undecided.

I partly quite fancy the idea of working hard for a few more years, then
simply dropping out of the rat-race once I can pay the house off in
    full.

Then there's a part of me yelling "I'm bored... I should do something
    hugely risky."

For now, this is ok though.

I'm still a fair old way off, but I'm glad I bought a house with a
managable mortgage, rather than 150-200K mortgages that seem to be
    normal nowadays.

I know the day it is paid (or is close enough that I could cover the
remaining mortgage working 3 nights a week in a McJob) I'll not have to
think about who I may upset, now will I have to do the accepted thing
because it's politically more palletable. Both freedom and security,
it's a valid aim in my book.

Yup it seems to be the opinion of those on that side too that they
finally found the right target. Grande in Brighton didn't do it, nobody
gives a **** what happens over here, provincial cities are populated
with expendable cattle. I suppose it raised fears of Lloyds or somesuch
being wiped out. If traffic jams concerned the money that runs the
country they would already have done something about it? Why all that
carnage over 30 years got no *effective* response but a couple of
countries half way around the world just got a major kicking is a frothy
topic of conversations. Current opinions of Ahern and McDowell's attack
is that they are provoking them in a "go on try it again you cunts" sort
of way now that America is no safe haven. I don't think Blair is sitting
back because he's a useless duplicitous ****......but to avoid
accusations of Brits kicking the Oirish again while they are down.

Generally Cross Border business is threatening to pick up )

House repairs over 5 years of living here : 0% of mortgage payments. In
fact, 0% of the cost of a Cadburys Creme Egg...

But I do need to sand down and varnish all the doors & windows though
    when I'm able.

  12. Indeed.

About 50k owed. Notalot, in the great scheme of things.

Or just sell the place and when I finish the contract keep travelling
until the money runs out. After all I'm not getting any younger.
Which bit where you in? The demand is enormous at the moment, also for
spanish teachers with the stronger links with latin america.

  19. It's not just repairs, it can add up in little ways too. We've been
letting our 2Br cottage out since we moved to the US end of Sept. In
those 5 months it's cost us something like 1300 ukp, due to 'small
incidental costs.' God helpo us if the boiler goes wrong, that really
will get us near to 6K a year. First tenant pulled out, so no rental
income one month, fucking picky tenant + bad communication from letting
agents since then = 100-200 quid a month so far. For that money they
could have had a new kitchen & bathroom, but hey, that's what happens
when you have to pay local tradesmen to fix things that you would
usually fix yourself at no/hardly any cost. As it is, they've had a new
TV aerial, fridge-freezer, and er, shower hose, which in no way adds up
to the amount that's been spent on the house!
That sort of thing adds up, esp when you're an 'absentee landlord'. But
it would be different for you, if you were just round the corner.
