More difficult to avoid these days as well, as it's virtually
imposible to buy salt tablets any more. In my Merchant Navy days we'd
be required to take up to twenty a day if working on deck in hot
climates. And failure to do so was very quickly noticeable, even if
fluid intake was maintained to the required level. Fortunately it's
also very easy to fix if you can replace the missing salt. Takes about
ten minutes to go from feeling absolutelu _shite_ to being perfectly
    well again.
That's the man. And yes, he certainly is.
I'm not convinced you get 'used to' the temperature in any
physiological way. Drinking loads of water (and upping the salt and
mineral intake) is the only way you'll be able to cope, IME.

Absolutely true. However, in mitigation we did jump off the bikes and go and
get pissed straightaway which exacerbated it as I forgot my plan to
rehydrate when I arrived. So, no I don't suffer from the heat particularly
badly and yes I am a TC.
No, as it happens it was the rest of you that need to shelter in the garage
    on the way to Dijon.
IIRC- which I do- it was YOU that was slacking from tiredness on the run to
Barcolonette while Ginge and I were merrily sweeping down the mountain. You
    even said "I'm feeling tired".

I know you're tremendously proud of your physical well-being at the grand
old age you've reached but not wanting to stay up and finish 5 bottles of
wine each says a little more about our drinking habits (well mine) than the
effect of the weather, I would say.

    _Not_, you fucking liar.
What, on one of those rare occasions when I'd stopped to let you catch
up, you mean? All that standing around is very tiring on the legs, you
    know.
Bwaahaahaa. If anything, I'm surprised that I'm still as fit as I am,
    given my eating[1], drinking[2] and exercise[3] habits.
Fucking lightweights, the lot of you.

[1] As it happens, I've decided, for the first time in my life, to
actively diet to try and lose a few kilos. I'm getting fed up with no
fitting even 31", let alone 30" 501s any more.
[2] And beer is one of the first casualties.
[3] I.e. none, except for skiing. So nothing at all from May to
    December then.

Excellent, almost sounds like a plan[1] starting to form. It's amazing

When travelling I always carry a couple of sachets of rehydration
salts in case struck by Montezuma's Revenge. They're said to restore
electrolyte levels. You'd know better than me whether these would
have the same effect as salt tablets - is there likely to be a
difference between being dehyrdated from having the shits and from
    sweating in the sun?

Anyway, said sachets are available over the counter in most chemists.

No, you really were tired, you said it yourself. Now whether it was exertion
or hangover is up to you to decide. For my money, and because I don't aspire
to being some kind of ever-young demi god, I think it's quite normal to feel
tired after half a year of sitting on one's arse in front of a computer
followed by a 4 or 5 day thrash through the alps. But if you want to talk it
up into a competition then I'm afraid that that day you were not "on it".

    I'm sure Ginge remembers.

Probably much better, in fact. NaCl is perhaps the major factor, but
other mineral salts are also important.
Dunno. Although I guess you'll lose much more salt through just
sweating - I'm not aware that diorrhea tastes salty (anyone care to
    comment?).
Tru 'nuff. Salt tabs are easier to take, mind.

Possibly, but in the meantime you'll have to put up with me.

IME dehydration (as described by Ace and prevented by keeping the
electrolytes correct) is often a component of heatstroke, which might
almost be defined as a syndrome, but actually has a definition related to
    core temperature:

Probably better than salt. You don't just need to replace the salt, you
want to get the fluid that you are driking to a close approximation of the
fluid in yoru system. That means it's absorbed *much* faster than just
plain water, which will tend to sit around in your stomach, not doing much.

Fast emergency solution: Glass of water, add 1 teaspoon of sugar, flip the
spoon around and add as much salt as you can get on the end of the handle
IYSWIM. Dissolve and drink. Tastes pretty grim but certainly does the
job. Probably as well as the expensive sachets as well if what my doctor
pals say is to be believed.

There may well be other minerals in the sachets that would help in event of
    prolonged shits though.

I understand the sachets to contain the basic salts found in the body
    - sodium, potassium, etc (the word "electrolyte" on the packet gives
me half a clue as to what they're meant to achieve).

And anyway, I don't think they're particularly expensive.

    Unlikley I feel
It would be, I suspect, unusual to suffer from heatstroke without suffering
de-hydration as well. But I think he might be either confusing them, or not
    distiguishing one from t'other IYSWIM

The latter. When we're talking about ordinary folk, in ordinary
situations, suffering from "heatstroke", we usually actually mean
what's more accurately referred to as "heat exhaustion". This is
caused by a combination of fluid and electrolyte depletion, and is
indeed easily "cured" by simply replacing the lost chemicals.

Real heatstroke, as defined on your link, is perhaps more often
referred to as "sunstroke" and is a very serious condition indeed, and
not one that most people will ever suffer from. Certainly not in the
context that we're talking about here.

It's worth noting that the linked page also seeks to confuse the issue
further, by quoting deaths from "excessive heat exposure" without
attempting to explain that most of them are actually just heat
    exhaustion.

    Fair enough
    See above
I was more using it for the initial bit of the definition of 'heatstroke'
    IYSWIM.
