A tale of a ringed bike (longish)

  1. maybe so, but I bought the thing from a friend who had it from his friend
who was the one who originally got the second-hand frame to rebuild it on.
This was all long before continuous licensing. I assume the replacement was
acquired legitimately, but I never had any paperwork.

  3. Plod is happy because he's given them a frame number that is kosher. He
hasn't let Plod look at it.

I consulted Plod myself, and Plod said there was no statute of
limitations on nicked vehicles, and it belonged to someone. Probably an
    insco.

Yes, but why, 20 years on, should you care? As the original frame
number appears to be unreadable to the eye, the only option would be
to get a CAT scan or similar done on it, so failing it's vital
importance in a 20 y-o murder enquiry, no-one's ever going to know
what the original number was, so there's no chance oh an owner having
    it removed from them.

  5. Oh, come on.

You're stopped by Plod for whatever reason. Plod does a careful check of
the vehicle (as Plod sometimes does). Plod sees the ringed frame.

You can say: "Oh, that's OK, ossifer, it was done decades ago and it's
not on any register any more, but I *guarantee* that you'll still be
explaining it some hours later down the station.

And it's a near-certainty that you'll be deprived of the bike for some
    time while they investigate.

In short, who needs the hassle when there are perfectly kosher bikes to
    buy?

The bike should be in the Pound. That's the beginning and end of the story.

Ah, that point I understand. Had *I* found the issue, then, like you,
I probably wouldn't have bought it.

However, I wouldn't bother if the bloke sold it to someone else. The
actual odds of it ever being an issue are extraordinarily slim, I'd
    say.
