Reading long posts, and having a morning dump, are the two things I
always leave til *after* I get to the office.

There are few finer things in live than shitting on company time.

The abbatoir ceased to exist more or less of its own accord when it
was found not viable to make it comply with European Regulations. The
by-products plant ceased operations at the same time.

The practice of furtively and deceitfully disposing of waste on land
was the subject of a formal Notice under the Control of Pollution Act
1974 which was a great opportunity to use the term "effluvia".

It was quite a widespread practice at the time (and still is, in rural
areas, but rather strictly controlled now) to use sprayers from
tankers full of waste (from pig farms, septic tanks and other sources)
to spread a layer across 'fallow' fields as a means of 'fertilising'.

This was the subject of quite a lot of action in response to
complaints, and was held to be Prejudicial To Health in many Courts.
It was never difficult to prove PtoH, as once the Court had seen
pictures of septic tank waste in particular lying on the surface of a
field, they wouldn't want to be downwind of that either. Once this
practice had been held to be antisocial it wasn't difficult to define
it as "unlicensed disposal of waste products" either.

More "socially aware" means are used now - feeding the liquid at low
pressure into flexible 'irrigation' pipes is one, ensuring that the
liquid just trickles out and is absorbed by the ground quickly,
without creating the aerosol implicit in spraying.

There is a much more effective means, that i smuch more high-tech:
direct ground injection. Using a big four-wheel drive tractor with a
rear-mounted tank and double rear wheels, large-bore 'needles' are
pressed into the ground behind the rear wheels and a measured quantity
of liquid is forced below the soil surface under pressure.

I was privileged to watch an early demonstration of this technique in
a field in Somerset. The conditions were proclaimed to be ideal as it
had rained overnight, softening the ground. It had been fucking
torrential against my hotel room windows at 03:00, at least.

Enter Big Green Tractor, Stage Right. Applause from Men In Suits from
Min of Ag and looks of lust from the tweedy throng. I was a bit hung
over, so shuffled around a bit to avoid looking into the sun.
Tractor rolls forward, comes to a smooth halt. Long shiny
needles appear to the rear, penetrate the ground and the tank pump
spins up. As needles withdraw, ground surface trembles beneath rear
wheels and tractor lurches backwards as mud becomes liquid.

Driver bales out, spraying agricultural oaths. Farmer who owns
tractor rushes forward, spraying even more agri-oaths at driver, then
turns and sprays spittle of men from Min of Ag.

Tractor sinks slowly, until the centres of the impressively-large and
immaculately-shod rear wheels disappear. Front wheels rear up.

Soil jellification, they called it. Fucking amusing, I called it.

wwaited years to be able to use it on ukrm).

Why not just start a thread on DIY/decorating, and work it round to non-drip
