Believe me, once the absorptive wadding had blown out, it was LOUD and
'orrible to boot. I can't remember if that was one of the cans we
repacked, come to think of it.

See Lozzos posts about it below, he said it was loud & when i got it, it was
    very loud.

I think we've determined that either it fell apart after Lozzo bought
the bike or you're overly sensitive to noise. I've owned plenty of loud
bikes in my life and that Triumph never came near to being what I'd call
    loud when Adie had it.

I think we've determined that it got much louder during Lozzo's
stewardship. You're banging on about a different era.

The earlier 595 must have been the best bike ever built in the history
of motorcycling, because the build quality of the 955i I had was bloody
good compared to Japanese offerings of the same time. When I sold it to
Nige it still looked as immaculate as when I first cleaned it properly
18 months and 10,000 miles previously.

    Heh.
The 595 was good but nowhere near perfect because when I chopped it for a
new 996 I was amazed by the quality of the Ducati.
It lived outside in Oxford for 6 months and only a single M6 allen screw, on
the steering damper, went red. It was replaced with stainless of course.
The bodywork was incredible tough and flexible. When I stuffed it bottom
yoke deep into the pea gravel at Silverstone (it took a mini tractor to haul
it out backwards) not a panel or the mudguard had broken or distorted. It
did take a lot of rubbing compound to flatten the paint.

That Daytona remains the only bike I've ever known to have to go back to
have the steering head bearings sorted inside the first 1,000 miles and
as far as I'm concerned that reflects on the build quality.

Other things about it didn't seem as good as they were on the original
bike and I didn't even know that the Triumph supplied end can only
    lasted a couple of years.

I saw what looked like a pukka Honda off road bike coming towards
me this morning. I thought it might have been a CR500 like Flook's
bike. Till he went past me and gunned it. CRF450 I think. ****
it was loud. It must have had a full competition exhaust on it,
I've never heard any other SM (that wasn't on a race track) that
    loud before.

I think we all realise that Adie & I are the only people who didn't
think that bike was loud. I suppose I should be worried and go for
hearing tests but I can't be arsed.
