I sometimes think about another airhead, but it would be a bit of a
mongrel - mono frame, big /6 tank, 1000cc engine with 40mm heads and Del
Ortos, 336RS cam etc, S-type fairing, Motobins discount card, and a recovery
    truck to follow me around.

Now I like the R90S but loathe the orange one, personally think the smoke
    grey looks far better.

I really never much liked either style: black or white with pinstripes was
better, preferably on a /6 tank.

If I was going to have a classic bike from the 70s, it certainly
    wouldn't be a BMW.

Cray engineering will give you 82bhp at 7500rpm for £1000. As always the
    limitation is the gearing.

I keep looking at the back plate of the gearbox and thinking it would not be
hard to replace the plate and driveshaft output with a milled duralamin
replacement incorporating a 90deg bevel. Hey presto, chain drive. Would
    require frame/arm mods to suit.

Trouble is unless you have a machine shop prepared to do it on a hobby basis
    the cost is prohibitive.
Easier to take an 1100S and turn it into a decent looking bike with
conventional tank and RS fairing. Not as cool though.

Given how Pos the R1200S is and
    www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/192936/images/bmwsportboxer.jpg would you
    bother with any of it.

That would be one way of doing it.
Madness. I'd be wanting a pleasant old truck to bimble around on, made from
a carefully-selected assortment of standard bits, and the little bit of
bolting-together that is the limit of my mechanical skills.
It would really have to be an old airhead boxer, because that's what I like.
    Nah, leaves me cold.

Aber naturlisch! Loved the hit counter.

I assume the interesting rear wheel casting is partly for strength and
partly to cool the protesting brake drum. And what I initially thought
was an airbox appears not to be. Presumably the toolkit includes a
    trolley jack.

Does it come with the Dixon-Bate already fitted? Couldn't see it in the
    pics...

    From that web page:
"The Mammoth was the fastest production motorcycle in the world in its day,
and was known for its comfort and speed."

Is that true? Was it as fast as a Vincent from twenty years previously?

    Eiron, Mar 5, 2008

  17. AFAIK, yes. They did (and still do) carry a Vincent-type price tag as
    well, though.

Now you're talking - an Egli Vincent counts as 70's just no?

  19. Weren't they built in the sixties? That said, there's a bloke in France
still building them after licensing the design AFAIR.

So I see. TBF more of a 60's 'ethos', though I thought they were still
being built at the start of the 70's. I've posted this link before so
