A mechanically type question thing.

Right, for a wee while now my bike has had some kind of problem right at the
top of the rev range. If I nail it then, when it hits about 12k, there's a
pause for maybe half a second in the power delivery, before it resumes and
pulls strongly right through to the rev limiter.

    So, two vital questions:

    1. What's this likely to be, given that power delivery is fine at lower and
higher revs and that it occurs, at the same point in the revs, in all
gears[1]? It also only seems to be happening when I have the throttle
nailed, but that may just be when it's most noticeable.

    2. Based on your answer to (1) should I fix it myself or give it to a tame
spanner-monkey to sort? When answering this please bear in mind my
legendary ability to get it all wrong when faced with a spanner.

[1] Or at least all of the gears I care to red-line it in.

Somehow I don't think that would help.

That'd be my guess. If it has carbs then it could be that the jet
needles are worn. I had similar symptoms on an old FZR600.

In my (very limited) experience of modern-ish sprots fours, carbs are
a pain in the arse to get out and even worse to get back in.

If the carb float bowls have drain plugs it's worth draining them
ans seeing what comes out. No dismantling required.
They could be full of water.

Did anyone ask about the state of the plugs?

It's sitting around 35k ATM, but it is still on the original sparkies, so I
may well whip them out and change them before trying anything more complex.

Failing that it will be shipped off to a man what knows.

You what? That's at least twice their life expectancy, surely.
That could only be constructive. Your problem is likely down to one
plug failing at that point, then picking up again. Here:

    Sound plan.

Piffle. I changed the ones in the Wing after 48k. Then again, that's
prolly less sparks than 35k on a 6R.

I changed Elly's in the CBR at 16k, as recommended. Made a distinct
difference, apparently: fucking ought to for an RRP of sixty quid a
    set.

You sure our friendly local mechanic didn't change them when he serviced
it, two years ago or whenever it was? Or was it just oil, filter, and
    sort out the brakes?
Pity he hasn't got a dyno, really. But I expect he knows someone that does.

Huh? You have to remove the carbs to change the plugs? Uh-oh... why do I
have this strange feeling that I'll be spending a large part of Easter
    in my garage?

Well I've got the tank and the airbox off.

I've also got a pile of bits and a growing sense of panic.

Hmmm, I don't know. Prolly still worth whipping them out though.

It all looks a bit complicated under there, doesn't it?

Before you start disconnecting hoses and wires, make sure you take note
of what goes where - digital camera is handy for this.

Be on the receipt, won't it? Or phone him up and ask.
Not in my garage you don't!

Oh, you meant the spark plugs. That's alright then.
