no chance, mate - it's not even BST until 30th of March, and even
then, I personally am of the opinion that it's summer between June and
    August inclusive and that's it.

I assumed that Champ was stating the date of the start of spring, which
would tie in nicely with your definition of summer.

The 21st of March is the first day of spring. I haven't a clue when
the first day of summer is supposed to be because it's not my (1)
    birthday.

    (1) Yeah, yeah, I know it's Bears birthday as well and it would have
been Windys had she still been here to give us stick.

Seeing as how the can of worms has been well and truly opened, how
would you reconcile that statement with the fact that the same date
has been referred to as "midsummer's" day/night for many centuries by
    cultures all over Europe?

Clearly, either way it's a good day to celebrate, seeing as it's my
    birthday[1].

[1] And AndyR's, but let's not dwell on that.

I can't. In all seriousness it is a little bit odd. The 21st should
really be referred to as the summer solstice (AIUI), whether it also
defines the start / middle of summer will depend upon one's geographical
location. After all, in Australia, it's the 'start' of winter.

FWIW, my *opinion* is that the UK climate is such that tail end of June
is when summer really starts (as much as it ever does) as the weather
for the three months to 21st September is likely to be 'better' than the
    3 months preceeding.
    Bloody good reason, then

Why? Most of March is damned cold
Most of June is not great either.

It would make *more* sense, IMHO to move the dates so that 1st July (for
example) falls where the current 21st June does. The equinoxes and
solstices are, after all, fixed occasions.

Only for the next hour or so, til I go to lunch for the rest of the day.

    Why not?

Seasonal climate is related to the progress of the Earth in its solar
orbit. The equinox and solstice directly relate to that position. Months
are merely a rough approximation of progress of the Moon in its
terrestrial orbit and the position of the Moon has bugger all to do with
climate and everything to do with tides, cheese and Aiken Drum.

So why would you prefer to use the lunar concept of a month to delineate
seasons instead of the orbit-related concepts of equinox and solstice?
    It simply makes no sense.

mostly it makes no sense to say that midsummer is the start of summer.
if it were the start of summer instead of the middle, it would be called
    startsummer, innit.
