A disappointment for Mr Plod.

Just as I was getting to the 60kph zone on my way into town this morning, a
considerate fellow (in a 4wd no less.....) 'alerted' me to the presence of a
radar trap just up the road a bit. I wasn't speeding anyway, but was
surprised to see that people still actually do this. Anyway, as I
approached the boys in blue, I could see the fellow with the radar gun
become visibly disappointed as he got the reading on me (speedo needle bang
on 60kph).....lowered the gun, slumped his shoulders, head down and said
something to his partner, who nodded in agreement. I assume it was 'must
have been flashed on the way in' or something similar.

Isn't there some ridiculously large fine for doing this sort of thing these
days? I seem to remember my ex telling me that the constabulary take a
*very* dim view of anyone caught flashing their lights to alert other
motorists of radar traps/cameras and such.

Dunno about Qld, but the Police here in Vic tried to clamp down on it, until there was a huge public
outcry with the media slamming them for showing themselves to be using speeding fines as pure money
makers (why else would they not want people to slow down when there's a radar trap about?).

After that the Police back-peddled quick smart and made public statements to the effect of "Anything
that makes people slow down is a good thing and we support it".

There was a case recently in NSW where they got the "alerter" for improperly
using his high beam not for the actual alerting.

There is no case for giving away the trap because the whole idea is for the
trap to be making people go slower, so if people are alerted and go slower
then that is supposedly what they want. Hoisted by their own petard (for
    once).

They had a big blitz on this a few years ago in Qld, and people stopped
doing it. Not sure about the regulations, but I suspect they haven't
changed, you are still obstructing justice or some crap.

Regardless of the law there are always people who will do it anyway, and I
always alert another rider when I can.

In WA the same has been done... I think the law has something to do with the
use of the high beam. Hence whilst in the car I just turn the lights on then
off a couple of times, not using the high beams at all.

But what would be stopping your excuse from being "I was indicating to turn,
    but the lights flicked inadvertantly"...??

On the bike with the lights hard wired, I suppose it'd be a case of,
"flashing lights... what flashing lights...? Must have been that bump I hit
make it LOOK like I flashed the lights...I get that all the time from
oncoming motorists flashing ME thinking I hit the high beams"

hmmm wierd , here in wa there is case law , which states flashing your
headlights to warn people to slow down regards of why is in effect warning
someone not to commit an offence and therefore no crime/offence.

There's no law to stop you waving at people to slow them down though. I do
this for any motorcyclist I see, and occasionally cars too.

I always flash 4WD's in an effort to slow them down, so that maybe they will
stay on their side of the road on curves and maybe not kill anyone. Unless
there's a copper in their immediate future, in which case I give them the
    ignore that they deserve.

There was a case in Boronia (a melb eastern burb) where a lady was charged
with improper use of her high beam, went to court, she was fined.
The local paper suggested that had she turned on her headlights and then off
and on and off a few times, she would not of been breaking the law.

I tend to do this now in my car., I figure I am not breaking the law. Pity
I cant do it with the bike (bit hard to do on the bike with hard wired on
    headlights)

25 years ago this was big news and people copped a lot of tickets and I
think everyone's just been a bit gun-shy ever since.
I haven't heard of anyone getting booked in Qld in decades.

I was booked about 6 years ago for it. The offence was "Use of a warning
device other than to warn of danger," or some such rubbish.

Of course, I was stupid enough to flash a bloody unmarked copper...

$30 and no points. As far as I'm concerned, it's worth it just to encourage
other people to do the same for me. Of course, being older and wiser (more
belligerent? ;) ) I'd probably fight it were I to be booked again now.

  18. I was booked about 6 years ago for it. The offence was "Use of a warning
"But officer, I was just warning you that there are a whole stack of cars up
ahead slamming on their brakes for no apparent reason."
