Something like that. I have pleasant and blurry recollections of
Canetoad rallies [1] in the rain and mud with the assistance of Mr
    Stones...

What bike do you ride? Usually if it's a current bike with a modern EFI
system then the engine management system will compensate for the lower
    octane rating.

If, however, it's an older bike then you'll notice it rattling or pinging
under load. Do that for long enough and physical damage will occur, either
bits being blown out of the piston crown or damaged valves or worse.

I'm assuming that you've read your manual and it specifically says "use
98RON or higher" in it? Lots of guys run higher octane fuels because of a
belief that it has to be better, after all that's what they read on the
internet, or what the salesman told them when they bought the bike off
    him.

Funny. Most water injection systems I heard of were purely using the
water to add coolness and stop things going bang.
Well, thank you for "Lysenkoism". I had to look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysenkoism, but, it is a nice word.

After over ten years in the cotton industry, I knew that you have to
watch out for agronomists, especially if they have political ambitions. :)

Biodiesel would be a good thing to produce, but it could be produced as
    well as Ethanol.

I don't think you actually have to grow wheat to make ethanol, but that
you can ferment most plant material, which may well be the "trash" from
    some other process.

  7. I've got the post-coital, floaty feeling of a new bike in the
garage... it's making me blissful and compliant

    2005 R1 (bleq, natch), incidentally.

    2, M'dear ? Has English usage departed my brain ? It's is a
contraction of "It is", is not ? If that is correct then

"I think you'll find it is use(d) exclusively for its cooling effect"

is grammatical, and hence only one of the apostrophes was in error.
    N'est ce pas ?

    JL
(pinged for apostrophe misuse only days ago so ready to defend the
    unfairly challenged !! :)

Really ? Ignoring the only bike I know of with a knock sensor (the BMW
K12 ) how exactly do they know they have low octane fuel, and what do
    they do to compensate ?

No idea , but the cars ping far less and the fuel is sorta almost
affordable ( now if they would offer more than 16 mpg about the town)

I remember the Scottish Imperial Gallon.

The proper one, not the wee cheating septic one.

    Possibly <grin>

    It's is a
    Yes, correct.

    If that is correct then
JL, PETAL!!!!!! Had big actually put the 'd' on the end of "use" in his
post then I would not have had an issue with that particular bit of
apostrophisation... but he didn't. My problem was: to call him on the
one-off possible typo, or to call him on the mis-apostrophisation, of which
he was guilty two more times in his post??? <giggle>. A numbers game.... and
    I went with the numbers.

This is a vexatious bloody issue that plagues English teachers - do you
second-guess the writer's intention, or do you just bloody red pen
EVERYTHING? (And omigosh what does red pen do to a student's psyche????????
I always used purple pen to lessen the psychological impact on my lovely
    students ;-) ...)
