97 Speed Triple Gone Bad

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Peter Johnston, Feb 9, 2005.

  1. Hi:

I have a '97 Speed Triple. The frame was replaced by the original owner
under warranty. He had it polished to a sparkling aluminum. Looks sharp!

It has 14,000 km on it and has developed a serious problem. Last time I
rode it, I barely made it home. Two jugs quit working and when I tried to
start it again, it sounded like the valves weren't closing - acted like the
timing chain/belt had skipped a cog or two. Hmmm. Sounds bad (i.e.
    expensive).

I've laid it down three times - all at low speeds - under 20 km/h. Never
really thrashed her - only hit the rev limiter four or five times.

Any thoughts or similar experiences out there?

    Peter

How can you have only hit the limiter four or five times? You're just
    not trying hard enough.

  6. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the

  7. The camchain on the triples can - and does - skip a few teeth when you
remove the tensioner and replace it unless you take all sorts of
precautions to jam the crank and cams in position, but how this could
happen in a low-speed drop (or three) I dunno.

Open it up and have a look.....

Have you checked the airbox for oil? It might have sucked some up the
crank breather when on its side. This could lead to anything from
    fouled plugs to bent conrods.

I must confess that I went faster (109)on my test ride than I've been on my
own Triple. I really don't think I have either the bottle, or the arms
required to redline it 6th. Plus I am distinctly leary about my skill.
Finally I am *very* dependant on my licence, so breaking the ton is not
something I do other than *very* rarely.

Slow down there Einsteins. So what you're saying is that you can ride
    /faster/ in NSL areas?

I'm going to have to think about this one.

yes. Unless you're in a traffic jam, traffic on NSL roads is /on
average/ going faster than in a 40 zone. So, it's easier/safer to go
faster on NSL roads than on 40 limit roads.

If I tried to do >100mph down the A10 at rush hour, I'd crash, whereas
I'd happily to >100mph along - say - the M4 during rush hour.

Unless you're talking about roads with no other traffic, in which case
    all bets are off.
